Reviewed 05.25.2007

Average Rating: 2.50

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst. 3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Rurouni KJS Rookie All-New Atom
boot speed
24 points
Team: none
Keywords: "Scientist"
Range: 0 x 1

DIAL:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10958&unitid=12616&universeid=6

ANALYSIS:
24 points for an opening 18 defense? YES, please. With his other stats and powers pretty poor, he's not much better than tie-up. But as such he's great to taxi along with a soft flyer who needs some protection from range. A second click sees a plummeting defense but Stealth and Close Combat Expert means he still has some utility in a fight.

FEATS?
MERCENARY, especially for your defense-sharing teams, is a great investment. SIDEKICK is less useful, since his movement value is too low to not be carried by his partner.

ETC.
In a nice twist on the REV progression, this is not the greenhorn Ray Palmer, but his student Ryan Choi, who finds and learns to use the shrinking belt Palmer invented.

IN SUM:
He's a one-trick figure. But what a trick! Meet the figure that can really maximize a JSA TA team.

RATING: 3 of 5.

Experienced Atom
boot speed
52 points
Team: Teen Titans
Keywords: "Teen Titans"
Range: 0 x 1

DIAL:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10862&unitid=12551&universeid=6

ANALYSIS:
The good? Opening with 18 DV + Super Senses and Stealth. The bad? He can't DO anything with that 1st click except make Leadership rolls. Push once to get Outwit and lose Stealth and Super Senses for Energy Shield/Deflection. Stay in that hindering terrain! He becomes a Perplexer a bit later, and gets some Outwit again later still.

FEATS?
He can be an INSPIRING COMMANDer or a BRILLIANT TACTICIAN. But with the former he lacks many teammates to inspire due to his low pointage, and the latter isn't useable until nearly mid-dial. His low movement makes NANOBOTS unfeasible.

ETC.
What's the college professor Ray Palmer doing on a team of teenagers, some too young to be his students?
He was temporarily de-aged into a teen (with all his adult memories) and thus led the Teen Titans for a while.

IN SUM:
With his best stuff buried in his dial, this is not the Atom at his best by a long shot. Useful for Titans themes only, and then just barely.

RATING: 2.5 of 5.

Veteran Atom
boot speed
64 points
Team: Justice League
Keywords: "Justice League of America" "Scientist"
Range: 0 x 1

DIAL:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10863&unitid=12551&universeid=6

ANALYSIS:
With great opening mobility, this is the true Ray Palmer at last. He's also the true BRILLIANT TACTICIAN, with opening Perplex to start. Even without the feat, he's got a decent AV and damage he can pump as needed. He also has a rising DV as he shrinks smaller, to a peak of 20! Then, even though his DV drops, he keeps Super Senses to remain a hard target.
His AV isn't so hot, but CCE can make damage stick and late-dial Outwit can lockdown the enemy when he can't reliably hit anymore.

FEATS?
In addition to BT, one might consider DOUBLE-TIME and PASSENGER, as he qualifies for both and his pushability could make it advantageous. NANOBOTS is a decent fit despite his lack of movement.

ETC.
The One True Ray Palmer, the Atom, at the peak of his ability.

IN SUM:
Great stats. Only his 60+ price is a liability, due to the fact that Brilliant Tactician is such an expensive card.

RATING: 3.5 of 5. He's still great in his support/3rd attacker roles.

Today's review is The Atom from Origin

We get two versions of the Atom in this set, the new guy and Ray Palmer.  Ray Palmer I know, so I am going to go with him.

None of these versions are pieces that I personally like to play.  If you can get your hands on him, the best version is the LE.

He is an LE, 58 points, 0 range, 6 clicks of life, and JLA team

Speed:  Free move phasing and stealth is never really bad

Attack:  Values aren’t anything great with no powers

Defense:  High, super senses can make him annoying

Damage:  Perplex and Outwit are never bad

The Good:  Outwit and Perplex

      High Defense

Free movement for phasing and moving into stealth

The Bad:   Low attack and damage numbers

Little expensive for a tie-up piece

     Not really anything special

Feats:   Protected and Nanobots are all that I would use, but he really doesn’t warrant the usage

Overall:   This one will be short.  He has a high defense and free movement that can make him a good tie-up piece.  The abilities can mess with your opponent’s strategy, and he can be overall annoying.  He is better than the other versions because he probably gives you the most for the points, but that is only saying so much.  I still he doesn’t really warrant use outside of theme teams.  Some people can get more use out of a piece like this, I just never use these, so this might make my review a little harsh.  If you got him, give him a shot on a Satellite JLA team.  His high defense is the only reason this is as high as it is.

Constructed/Unrestricted: 2.5 / 5

Sealed/Draft: N/A / 5

Overall:  2.5 / 5
