Today's review is Martian Manhunter from Origin

 

If you know who the JLA is, then you know who he is.

 

I think the best of the three is the Veteran

 

He is 218 points, 8 range 1 target, 10 clicks of life, a flier, no AE, and a JLA team

Speed:  Phasing, followed by HSS, RS, Charge, and Mind Control…that’s a lot

Attack:  Consistent values with combos that confuse and anger me.  HSS with Psy Blast?  Running Shot with Super Strength?

Defense:  Super Senses, Imperv, Invuln, more SS, and then toughness with a big spike at the end

Damage:  Outwit and perplex, I like it, and always dangerous with them values

The Good:  High values for attack and damage

      Lots of movement powers

      A lot better than his old Unique

      Outwit and Perplex

The Bad:   Awful power combinations

    First click makes him a sitting duck

    Useless team ability for that many points   


Feats:   Protected is an absolute must, and anything else you want to throw around on him


Overall:    This is a piece I was looking forward to for a while but was still a little disappointed.  For the points, he just cannot hold a team on his own…none of his versions really can.  For theme teams in low points, go with the rookie.  In higher point games, go with this guy.  I hate when HSS comes on the second click.  It works for KC Supes because he is ridiculous…this guy is no KC Supes.  He isn’t bad, but just isn’t amazing, and for over 200 points you need to be.

Today's Click of the Day is  Martian Manhunter
 
Which is the best?: Rookie starts with Stealth..he's out. It's a close call between Exp. and Vet. but the Experienced has powers that involve range and he shoots 6 squares away. Winner: Veteran.
 
He is 218 points; JLA Team; Flies; 8 Range; 1 Arrow

 Speed  -- Does Martian have an activation click? Good amount of run-and-shoot abilities down the dial. Mind Control is basically pointless. Values seem a bit low.
 
 Attack  -- So Phasing & Super Strength can't work together. HSS & Psychic Blast can't work together. Running Shot & Super Strength can't work together. Maybe Charge & Super Strength? Well he loses Super Strength. WOW..
 
 Defense  -- Wizkids is telling me Martian isn't tough at full health but after getting hit becomes tough? Impervious and Super Senses are the same thing except Impervious deducts 2 damage. I don't see why Impervious isn't front loaded. Defense is hittable until you need to heal him.
 
 Damage  -- FINALLY something I like: Outwit. Followed up by tons of Perplex and some more Outwit. Trust me, he's going to need the Perplex. Numbers remain above par the entire dial.
 
 Sculpt  -- Nice belt buckle.

~ Martian reminds me of the new Darkseid. He can be utilized as a monster taxi with Outwit until you decide to push or get hit. But everything on the dial is so out of place and for a near 220 point fig, only three clicks of double-digit attack numbers? No feats; he won't be played anyway. Martian Manhunter was a clix that really needed to be redone, and to me, he still is. ~

ANALYSIS:
Starting with Stealth and JLA TA would be better if he had better range. As it is, you'll have to push him to get to his fighting clicks, and even on those he's not that hot. His defense is really just average at best.
His best feature? A long string of Perplex to help himself and the team. No feats necessary aside from the usual suspects.

ETC.
He gets the "Detective" and "Police" keywords due to his civilian identity of John Jones, police detective.
Could make for some interesting theme teams beyond the usual JLA ones!

RATING: 3 of 5. He's OK for the points, but not quite battle-ready enough.

ANALYSIS:
Much more battle-ready to start, E Martian can also push to slot #2 to go Stealthy and Perplex from the shadows. Later he gets some range ability with Running Shot and Psychic Blast. Too bad he's stuck with a paltry 15 DV with Super Senses on those clicks. I'd push or heal away from that soft spot as fast as possible, since a 6 range fig is just asking to be Charged. Later still he gets team-friendly support powers of Probability Control and more Perplex along with Incap, so he's never useless.

This is the J'onn J'onzz of the goofy JLI era, when he more frequently morphed into his native Martian form, hence the head on this sculpt. Dunno why he gets PC, though.

RATING: 3.5 of 5. That soft middle brings him down (and might get him brought down); otherwise he's solid.

ANALYSIS:

Finally, big green here gets a decent range, but opening with Phasing and Super Senses is disaster watiing to happen. Do not ever field him without PROTECTED. Real fighting powers like HSS, Psychic Blast and Impervious show up on slots 2. Too bad he can't Psychic Blast WITH HSS. But who cares when he's got Perplex and 4 damage? He can be a BRILLIANT TACTICIAN for the JLA, too -- hope you have room for some others on your team. Hope you also don't land on Running Shot, again saddled with 15 DV and Super Senses. A solid hit here and Martian gets shoved right past a rising DV+Toughness, Plasticity, Outwit and Psychic Blast that could make him a late-game threat and less-easy KO.

To clear up a common misconception about this slightly sub-par sculpt: it's not his thighs that are huge.
They're correct. It's his calves below the knees that are the same size as his thighs, giving him his doughboy look.

RATING: Huge price tag with too many soft clicks negates his strengths. Can't rate him better than 3 of 5, and that's being generous.
