ANALYSIS:
At 37 points, the new retro Rookie Wasp is one of the cheapest free-move fliers in the Constructed game now (even though the shrinking heroine STILL shouldn't be ABLE to taxi, say, the Hulk). A decent starting Attack Value and Super Senses give her a role beyond mere positioning -- on her first click, anyway. But her 2nd slot is mediocre, and the rest of the dial's Energy Shield/Deflection and Incapacitate are both sunk by poor numbers. She's not even decent tie-up at this point.

FEATS?
THUNDERBOLTS is a no-brainer, but it's being retired.
That leaves ALPHA FLIGHT to aid her AV in certain clutch attacks. I wouldn't bother with HEIGHTENED REFLEXES, FORCE FIELD or STUNNING BLOW for her late dial powers.

ETC.
Aside from the carrying ability (1st appearance cover notwithstanding), this is a fairly accurate Wasp for her early days as Ant-Man's debutante sidekick.

IN SUM:
But do you really want to play this dizzy Bloomingdale's commando? In Unrestricted games, the old Wasps are either better or cheaper. She's only good for theme teams, and even there, having only the one keyword limits her.

ANALYSIS:
No longer the WASPy ditz of the 616 Marvel Universe, this is the Asian scientist married to a wifebeater.

She gains a click of life, with three straight upfront of Range Combat Expert. Too bad her range is so short; she'll really need her Super Senses to stay in the fight. That's assuming she can ever get there, as her movement is a fairly insect-sized 6 or less. Back half of her dial is stuck with Stealth and ESD to help her hide or run away...which is all she should really do at that point.

That's because you want to keep her on the board for her nifty anti-Stealth Ultimates team ability, as she's one of the cheapest tournament-legal sources of such. She also has a lot of keywords for inclusion on themed builds.

FEATS?
HEIGHTENED REFLEXES will make KOing her an even bigger pain if she's on hindering, since most enemies will have to Charge or HSS to close range to hit.

IN SUM:
Such short range keeps her from being very good, but that damage ability isn't bad. And the TA makes her useful to wildcards everywhere.

RATING: 2.5 of 5. Add a half-point for team builds with wildcard snipers, Chargers and Pouncers.

Today's review is Wasp from Avengers

 

Today we are going to review both versions of Wasp we get in this set.  The old wasp was a cheap taxi with a huge defense and free movement in both her versions.  Now we get the original Avenger and Ultimates versions.

 

First up is the Avengers Wasp

 

She is a rookie, 37 points, 5 range 1 target, 5 clicks of life, a flier, no AE, and Avenger team

Speed:   Low numbers with no powers…whoops

Attack:   A single click of 9 followed by single target incap with low numbers

Defense:  Finally, something good, stays high the whole time, SS can keep her alive


Damage:  Low with no powers…great

 
The Good:  High defense

      Avengers team

                Low numbers all around

                Why use her over Vet Hive Trooper?

               
Feats:  Thunderbolts or Alpha Flight and that is all


Overall:  Well, what we get here is a semi-cheap taxi with very limited attack ability.  With her lack of move and shoot, she will not get the first attack off.  With her low numbers, she will probably not hit that attack or do enough damage to be worth it.  She cannot even really taxi a piece out too far, being just out of range of tieing up those 10 range pieces.  I would only use Alpha flight on her, just to up the attack and no drive up the cost.  I guess she shows how broken Spymaster is, his numbers are ridiculous for 29 points.  Use her on avengers teams and that is all.

Now on to the Ultimates version

 

She is experienced, 49 points, 4 range 1 target, 6 clicks of life, a flier, no AE, and Ultimates

Speed:   Even lower numbers, why stealth at the end?

Attack:   still only a click of 9 for 50 points…not good

Defense:  An extra click of super senses can help if your good with one die


Damage:  She flies, so she can always use RCE, damage really isn’t bad

 
The Good:  High Defense and useable damage

      Late dial stealth to keep from being killed off

      Ultimates team

      Cheapest piece with Ultimates team

     

The Bad:  Low numbers on movement and attack

                Will not do anything special in a game


Feats:  Uhh….Nanobots if you want, I wouldn’t use any


Overall:  Wow, she kind of reminds me of the old Xplosion Iceman with a better team ability.  She is even less useful of a taxi than the rookie version, but at least this sculpt has eyes drawn on.  Use her on ultimates teams only and teams abusing ultimates team.
