DIAL

ANALYSIS:
After 5 previous Silver Surfers, in this "freebie"
version we finally get frontloaded Hypersonic Speed.
That's huge, as is the better-than-decent 11 AV with 4 damage and two targets he also sports. He gets a special power, Cosmic Speed, that's essentially range-only Hypersonic Speed. This means, unfortunately, that Surfer is going to have big trouble with Stealth after that sole initial HSS click.

Since he's such a range specialist, use his Power Cosmic team ability to push for free and stay out of close-fighting range. Especially since he gets Running Shot a little later, when his double-target Energy Explosion and Psychic Blast powers will be more useful (they're incompatible with both HSS and his special power).

FEATS?
So much EE cries for ARMOR PIERCING, but since you'll be using some form of Speed power, you won't get that much out of it. If you want to boost his survivability as a one-man army, REPULSOR SHIELD can help soften the ranged shots you'll be forcing the enemy to take.

IN SUM:
With better move+attack ability than all previous versions save LE Norrin Radd, this might be the Surfer to field even after the Coming of Galactus events. But lack of any Impervious and the incompatibility of certain powers makes him a little less than ideal for his cost. (But hey, he's freebie Surfer, whaddaya
want?!?)

RATING: 3.5 of 5. That weakness against stealthed figures cost him at least half of point.

Today's review is Silver Surfer from Avengers

 

I think by this point, we all know who the Silver Surfer is.  Here is the third Power Cosmic version of him we have gotten in a year.

 

He is a Unique, 231 points, 10 range 2 targets, 9 clix of life, a flier, no AE, and Power Cosmic

Special Power – Cosmic Speed – Can only use Option 1 of HSS when attacking

Clicks – Speed – 2,5,6

 

Speed:   Lots of HSS and HSS-Lite alight with some Running shot and phasing to run away, very nice

Attack:  EE works well with 2 targets, but doesn’t work with HSS. We only get the psy blast/RS combo for one click, so that is disappointing.  If you are running a standard slingshot team, you will almost never use the psy blast and EE over HSS.

Defense:  Numbers are average, and no Impervious?  Regen helps and ESD gives him a nice 18 defense to sit on while running away to nanobot back up


Damage:  No powers is weird, but you wouldn’t be able to use them anyway with all that movement, so no complaints.  Numbers aren’t great, but I guess not awful either.  He can always nanobot back up to Cosmic Speed

 
The Good:  10 range 2 targets

       4 clicks of HSS

       Good, Consistent attack values

       Phasing to run away

       EE and Psy Blast work with 2 targets

       Upfront 11 attack and HSS on a Surfer

       Power Cosmic team

     

The Bad:  Powers don’t work with HSS

                No Impervious

                9 clicks is really short for the points

                Damage isn’t as good as it should be


Feats:  Armor Piercing, Nanobots, Shellhead, and Protected work best.  At the very least, shellhead is a must.  You can fit shellhead and nanobots along with a rookie tornado in a 300 point game


Overall:  When they finally showed all the heralds, a lot of people had complaints about ol’ Radd here.  I can see that the biggest complaint of all is the short dial; he should be at least 10 for the points.  Then again, the V from Supernova has 10 clicks and he is 30 points more.  The key thing here is the massive amount of HSS with high damage and it is UPFRONT.  Keeping him a strong Alpha Strike piece that never really craps out is very important here.  Also, if he does get hit down to his last few clicks, he can always break away and run to an object to nanobot back up to Cosmic Speed.  I see a lot of potential with this piece, and can pretty much be a one man army if used right.  TK is a must, because it will be tough for people to catch him.  Also, he is the first HSS piece in a while to start with more than a 10 movement. That makes him really unique these days, and more dangerous than you would think.

Special Power (underlined): Silver Surfer can use Hypersonic Speed, but only option 1 and can make only ranged combat attacks when using the power.

 Speed  -- HEY starting Hypersonic Speed. Lots of move and shoot including four full clicks of HSS. Phasing is good for breaking away since you don't need to.

 Attack  -- Excellent longevity but not so extraordinary peak for a 200 point guy. Energy Explosion will never be used. Psychic Blast may come in handy on occasion.

 Defense  -- The downfall. . only Invulnerability? And only one 17? At least the Surfer will be running around and such, causing some difficulty to get an attack on him anyway. I like that Regeneration.

 Damage  -- Straight-out 4 is nice. I guess Psychic Blast can make up for the low threes. Ending 2 means Nanobots.

~ Low overall damage
~ Bad amount of useless powers
~ Three KO clicks

~ I almost put Fortitude as a feat candidate when I realized he has the Power Cosmic Team. No pushing damage either. If I got a Silver Surfer would I use him? Sure. 16 maximum range and above-par attack favors tournament players. Good luck attaining one.
