Today's review is Scarlet Spider from Sinister

Scarlet Spider comes from a very unpopular story arc where Spider-man got cloned.  I never read these but am in no hurry to either.

He is a Unique, comes in at 86 points, 6 range 1 target, 8 clicks of life, and is a Spidey Ally

Speed: 9,9,8,8,7,6,6,6   2 of Leap Climb, 2 of Plasticity, then 2 of L/C, then 2 of Plasticity

Attack: 9,9,9,9,8,8,8,7  Incap first 2, then 3 of Super Strength, then 2 of Incap

Defense:  17,17,16,15,15,15,14,13  Super Senses first four, Combat Reflexes next four

Damage:  2,3,3,2,2,2,1,1  One of RCE, 1 of Outwit, then RCE last two

The Good:  Consistent attack

      Wildcard is always great

Hard to hit and consistently high def, while being easy to heal

      A nice tie-up piece

8 clicks is pretty good for the points

The Bad:   Incap with 1 target is bad

Some of the power combinations do not go well

Outwit should be on the first click

    6 range isn’t great

Feats:   Pounce is no good, ICWO and Protected if you want

Overall:   Scarlet Spider is a piece that is mediocre at best.  He is able to do some damage, but not really the amount that cheap pieces can.  As a tie-up piece, there are better pieces out there.  The outwit helps, but you would have to push off of it.  If you get hit, you will never be able to use it.  The def stays very high for the whole time, and since he is a wildcard, you could make him a 19 def with SS and CR(21 from close).  You could also make him a batman ally.  With a simple push click, you get a stealthed outwitter who can move anywhere.  On his own, he is a decent piece…nothing great.  Since he is a wildcard, he will get some help there.  He will see a little play by his fans, but on the whole he may just take up space in a tackle box.

Constructed/Unrestricted: 3 / 5

Sealed/Draft:  2.5 / 5 (Not enough Teams to take advantage of)

Overall: 3 / 5

Rurouni KJS Once upon a time, college student Peter Parker had a professor named Miles Warren. This prof was a cloning genius who learned that Pete's cells were Spider-Man's. So he cloned a Spider-Man who died after a horrific fight. Or so it was until some bad writers decided to say the clone somehow survived and returned as Ben Reilly, the Scarlet Spider. Thus began the Clone Saga which went from intriguing to an unmitigated disaster for the Spidey-mythos.

Powers and analysis:
1st click: fully loaded with Leap/Climb, Incapacitate, Super Senses and Ranged Combat Expert.
2nd click swaps in Outwit.
3rd & 4th clicks change a lot: Plasticity, Super Strength and no Outwit.
5th click: Leap/Climb returns while Combat Reflexes appears.
6th click regains Incap.
7th click regains Plasticity and RCE, and the final click loses Incap.

Unlike most Spider-Men, Clone Spidey starts as a ranged attacker. But that 6 range limits his use as such; you'll have to use his wildcard status to help him in this arena. What best about him is that he holds onto a pretty solid attack and defense across half his dial, making him fairly pushable. Middial Super Strength and late Incap mean he can remain a threat on every click. Or you can use his Plasticity to hold down enemies for the team.

Feats:
Some have gotten good use out of TRICK SHOT. But other than that, he doesn't really benefit much from cardboard. Although it doesn't fit him thematically, PROTECTED might be better for him than most since it could give a free push to his Outwit.

Themes:
I'm sure there's a Maximum Clonage theme team available somewhere. And, sadly, he fits any "dead characters" theme as well.

Comic accurate?
Surprisingly, yes, I think. SSpidey used a bit higher-tech web-shooters than his "brother" and took a more deliberate approach to fights; hence the RCE and early Outwit.

In sum:
Scarlet Spider is not a stellar piece, but he never sucks. A fine 2nd or 3rd attacker with legs.

Rating: 3/5
