Today we'll be reviewing Eclipso from Collateral Damage

This is the version of Eclipso that I’m attracted to.  The other one just did not do it for me.

By the way, if you’re not reading Infinite Crisis you should be.  Most of these characters are from that story line and it is definitely the best thing DC has done in the past two decades.

LE:  138 points, Mystic Team

MOVEMENT:  Stealth is very good, but it is not as good as a move and shoot ability.

ATTACK:  WOAH!  WOAH!  Danger!  Exceptionally low attack.  Sure, Psychic Blast is about the best attack ability for a flying character to have, but seriously an 8 attack on the second click?

DEFENSE:  I like the regeneration, but this character has a really low defense.  The 9 clicks will keep her alive, but is her mid-dial worth anything?  Regeneration can only get her back to her 5th click.  The fifth click is only a 7 attack with no speed ability.

DAMAGE:  Wow, every stat on her is wow.  She needs at least a 4 damage to be playable.

SCULPT:  From the picture it does not appear to be the best sculpt.  She looks more like a nightmare then the girl of my dreams.

OVERALL:

*       Every stat is low.

*       The spikes in her stats comes at odd and useless times

*       Stealth and psychic blast are a very nice combo.  Anybody who has ever played Jinx with a Batman Team Ally will understand

*       Speaking of Jinx, for 54 points she is better in every way and has probability control.

*       Her defensive abilities make her have a very long dial.  Mystics team makes that long dial even more painful.

*       Stealth makes her unable to be outwitted (as long as you keep her in stealth)

For a character capable of controlling The Spectre she is stupidly weak.  I would play her if she was 60 or maybe 70 points, but currently she is 60 points higher costed then that.  Do not get any ideas that feats are going to be able to save her, they will not.  She is over priced and poorly designed, but with the stealth and long dial she will definitely be playable in draft.

But I don’t review for draft so…

SHE RECEIVES 1 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 5 THUMBS UP!

VermillionSL Eclipso

Well, look who we have here; cross synergy with comics within a Heroclix set, this time compliments of Infinite Crisis. Looks like DC pulled a Marvel. Whoopee. Let’s see what we got here…

Sculpt: Since the only version of this figure I have seen is the paintmaster on the WizKids website, I probably don’t have the best perspective on this thing’s sculpt. That being said… it looks hideous. It has one of those fugly Infinity Challenge apeface sculpts, near as I can tell. I’ve only seen this new version of Eclipso appear a few times, and the sculpt looks somewhat like the train wreck from the comics… I guess that may be intentional. Still, quite ugly. The pose isn’t even as dynamic looking as I believe the WK figure designers may have been going for. Ghost Widow = prettier goth chick.

Playability: Her dial falls victim to the new dial designer’s lower AV’s with higher DV’s design tendencies. A 9 starting AV for 138 points is not very… good.

Her real strength is in her long lasting freshness. Unlike the old Eclipso, who sank like a stone after a good shot in the jaw, Jean Loring has a tendency to last longer in a fight. She’s a mystic, so your opponent will probably think twice before sending a figure like KC Flash after her. And, in an even more annoying twist, she regenerates! A renewable source of retaliatory damage! If you don’t put her down in one turn, you run the risk of her getting her second wind, and you losing your footing. Very annoying.

Her dial has an upswing as she approaches near death. A little pulse wave, an AV boost, but her damage lingers at 1. A nova blaster she is not. A better choice would be to regenerate her at this point, anyways.

Unfortunately, her place in battle, as can be gleaned from her powers, is stealth sniping. 138 points for someone that psychic blasts opponents from the bushes for three is not very good point efficiency.

Stealth shield: still costs too much.

Main Attacker: not enough oomph.

So what Jean Loring as Eclipso presents us with is an expensive secondary attacker. Sure, she’s annoying as all get out, but really, you could get better mileage out of a Veteran Jynx with Nanobots.

Theme play: not really any… you could play her with that new Gigante Spectre coming out some time this year… but I doubt he’ll need her help. Other than that, I can’t think of any teams that need this Eclipso.

I’ll give her extra points for being annoying, but not much else.
