Majinxstar Morlock Leader

Today we are looking at Morlock Leader, otherwise known as Callisto. This LE seems different from the others since Callisto is probably her real name and Morlock Leader is what she is. In terms of playability this piece seems to be on par with the likes of Spiral. She brings leadership and a blades teamed up with flurry. This is a horribly devastating combo thats makes Logan, Spiral and Ultimate Sabretooth/Wolverine so popular. Morlock Leader is no different in terms of gameplay. She only costs 47 points and has a 10 attack. Use her as your homeland security in bigger games. If you want to have her go after someone TK her out and have her slice and dice, just be careful she doesn't have any defensive powers.
Also keep a probability controler near her so she can be super effective with her blades because her 1 damage isn't reliable. Have fun with this piece if you win her and use her as the terror she truely is.

Godwin Morlock Leader is the Limited Edition version of Callisto from the Ultimates set. I never really quite got Callisto. She is not a bad REV set, but in Ultimate they came out with the new Morlocks team ability, which is useful in close combat, and then 1 of the only 2 figures that have this ability is primarily a run and shoot figure.

Well after looking over Morlock Leader I must say that this figure looks like it would use the Morlock team ability quite well. In fact the dial of this figure is significantly different then Callisto. Her 45 points falls in between her Rookie and Experienced point wise, but she plays completely different. Starting with her movement her Speed of 9 on her first two clicks will help her move around nicely. She also has 2 clicks of Leadership to help give additional actions for your team.

Her Attack is where she really raises eyebrows. To start her Attack of 10 is nice for a 45-point figure. Further look at her dial shows that she keeps an Attack of 10 for 2 clicks, then 9 for 2 and 8 for her last two, so her Attack never drops below 8. Now throw in Flurry on her first two clicks and she now has 2 close combat attacks on the same turn. Now this is where the Morlock ability comes in. While in close combat for any friendly figure adjacent to both Morlock Leader and the target-opposing figure you get +1 to your Attack. So if you have two friendly figures then her Attack goes to 12. That is just beautiful. Granted it may not always be easy to move figures up to surround an opponent so that’s why that starting 10 is so nice.

Did we mention her damage yet? Morlock Leader follows a power combination that is can be very devastating if the dice fall right. Like Spiral and Logan and a few others she combines Flurry with Blades / Claws / Fangs for a possible 12 damage on a single turn. What is even better is she starts with this combination so you don’t have to push her or wait to take damage to use this combo. Watch out for Outwitters though because her natural Damage of 1 is not going to cut it even with Flurry.

To round her out her defendability is mundane with a starting Defense of 15 and 6 clicks of life with no damage reducing powers. Still for 45 points her points are well spent on her offensive capabilities, but a couple of good hits will knock her out of the game Overall I did a double take when I saw this figure’s stats to make sure I had them correctly. I really think for 45 points she is truly a useful figure in any size game and plays very similar to Spiral (although I like Spiral better). She would be awesome in a sealed booster only since she is LE if you pulled her from a booster something went horribly wrong.

Overall Score: (Out of 10. Score of: 4 = horrible, 5 = below average, 6 = slightly above average, 7 = great, 8 = outstanding)

Morlock Leader

Rank: LE
Point Value: 47
Team: Morlocks
Range: 6
Ranged Attacks: 1 Powers
Speed: 9/9/8/8/7/7 Flurry
Attack: 10/10/9/9/8/8 BCF
Defense: 15/15/14/13/13/12
Damage: 1/1/1/1/1/1 Leadership

Background: Yawn, I have to say the whole Morlocks storyline pretty much bored the heck out of me. In my opinion, the whole Morlocks thing never really served any purpose except to highlight metaphorical social commentary about the haves mutants (those who look human) vs the have-nots (those with the really nasty tentacles coming out of the nostrils). The only good thing to ever come out of that storyline was Mutant Massacre, which gave Marvel an edge at the time for being callous enough to kill mutant children (I actually got goosebumps when I saw the scene where one of the heroes closed the eyes of the dead Morlock girl. Powerful stuff). Anyway, Callisto was/is the leader of the Morlocks, yadda yadda yadda, she s got a thing going against Storm, she was killed off but came back again. Like I said, Yawn.

First Thoughts: If anyone is ever wondering whether or not Morlocks TA will be a competitive theme, Morlock Leader should at the very least set those doubts aside. No, she s not going to single-handedly win tournaments, but created correctly, a Morlock theme team with this figure will definitely be a power to be reckoned with.

Strengths: Ok, why is Morlock Leader good? Two
Powers: BCF + Flurry. A front-dial combo with these two powers plus a 10 AV is no laughing matter. Here s my math: With BCF, you have a potential 6 max damage.
You can multiply that by two from Flurry for a potential 12 Damage. If you push and repeat, that jumps up to 24 clicks of potential Damage. Oh, and remember Flurry means you don t have to use it all on the same figure. Combine this with the Morlocks TA, which encourages swarming by giving you a +1 to your AV for every friendly adjacent figure to you and your opponent s figure, and you DO NOT want to base this figure, even if you re The Freakin Atom. Oh, and guess what, Leadership on this figure actually makes sense, because a Morlock theme team will actually need extra actions. All in all, this figure MAKES the theme work.

Weaknesses: Well, Morlock Leader probably won t survive the first encounter with basing an opponent with a 15 Defense. Also, ranged figures will have a field day trying to take her out. Since her strengths are in her close combat skills, anyone who plays her will have to use a lot of effort and strategy to get her into close combat situations before she gets taken out.

Opportunities: If you re playing a theme Morlocks team, please remember this: Mob Mentality! The key to using Morlocks is to swarm opponents under by basing them and beating them senseless, regardless of the cost. Which leads us to this point: Everyone is Expendable! Need to sacrifice those two R Morlocks to base Morlock Leader with the enemy? DO IT! Body Count doesn t matter as long as you take your enemy down with you. By herself, Morlock Leader is actually a very decent secondary attacker for her cost. TK her in to someone and watch her tear them a new dial.
Just don't expect her to be back though....

Threats: Against a ranged team, Morlocks are toast, because there isn t enough support figures out currently to support this theme. At least SHIELD has guys who can TK and Support right now. Wait for Mutant Mayhem, and then we ll see where we can go Same deal with Morlock Leader, as it s hide in the shadows until you get the opportunity to strike, sorta like what the Morlocks should of done in the comics .

Conclusions: Solid overall offensive figure. This figure actually makes Morlock teams competitive (sorta). Also a good addition to any tournament teams, as her point cost and her abilities make her a very good secondary attacker. For casual, it s MORLOCK TIME!!!

Tournament: 4
Casual: 4
