Name: Shazam!(Kingdom Come)
Set: Unleashed
Number: 221
Rarities: Mail Away LE
Costs: 256
Health: 12
SSADD:12/12/17/5
Powers: Hypersonic Speed, Super Strength, Quake,
Impervious, Invulnerability, Toughness, Exploit
Weakness, Outwit
Ranged Attacks: NONE
Team: Kingdom Come

As I mentioned in the Magog review, Captain Marvel
(legally known as Shazam!) is the main villain in Mark
Waid and Alex Ross' Kingdom Come Elseworlds
mini-series. Yup, that's right, he's a villain. Why?
I dunno, he got seduced by Luthor and his cronies.
Does it really matter? Ever since DC Comics
successfully sued Fawcett comics back in the 30's for
creating basically a "Superman clone", it seems as if
the two powerhouses were on a collision course. And
in Kingdom Come, we get it...boy do we get it. I'd
have to dig out the issues and re-read them, which I'm
not gonna do, but as I seem to recall, Shazam! isn't
the victor. Big surprise. The Big Blue Boy-Scout
always does beat the Big Red Cheese.

So while the Kingdom Come Superman is a Unique that
can be found in any old Unleashed booster, Shazam! is
another in the long line of Mail Away Limited
Editions, this time from the folks at Wizard. You can
get an order form in the most recent issue of Inquest
magazine, and last month's Wizard. Or you can win my
contest, the details of which are here: http://www.pojo.com/heroclix/COTD/March2004/30.shtml

So let's look at the figure shall we? As I mentioned
Shazam! is a pale imitation of Superman, and so is
this LE. The starting stats are almost exactly the
same, though the powers are vastly different. No
ranged attack for Shazam, which means while Supes (and
Magog for that matter) can deal 7 clicks of damage
from a successful ranged attack, Shazam has to base
another figure and can only deal 5 (unless you perplex
that up). Not that that's too shabby, it just ain't
worth 256 points. Also, Quake in combination with a
ranged attack is a nifty combo...without ranged
attack, Quake is kind of iffy. Everything else about
this click is similarly copied from KC Superman, just
not done well.

So far, I've ordered ever single Mail Away (except
that elusive Arwyn with the dog that I never did find
an order form for...) and I have yet to use ANY in a
real game. Doubt I'll be using this one either.

Like I mentioned earlier, KC Shazam! is a mail away
LE, so for $10 and the order form (insert contest plug
here), you can get two of them. About a year from
now, newer players might just well want one. I always
order two, one to keep, one to trade. For some
reason, the Wizards LE's seem to be available for a
LOOONG time after the initial ordering date...OWAW
Supes and Bezerker Wolverine (the first two) were
available for over a year after they first came out,
and have only recently been sold out. I expect the
same for this one, actually I expect worse, since
Shazam isn't really a household name, unless you
remember the old live-action series with Isis, or you
caught a rerun on TV Land.

My Ratings:

Playability 4 of 5
Collectability 3.5 of 5.

Next week - MORE Unleashed.

Havokclix "Shazam (aka: Captain Marvel)

In Kingdom Come, our little boy has grown up to become
the spitting image of his alter ego, Captain Marvel.
However, he's being controlled by Lex Luthor, who
wants nothing more than the destruction of all
metahumans. He uses some strange brain leeches to keep
a firm control over Captain Marvel's mind, and in the
climactic fight, he is fighting Superman, until Supes
convinces him to stop fighting so Kal can stop a nuke
from coming down on all the metahumans there. Shazam
agrees, but then flies up faster than Supes, grabs the
nuke, and yells SHAZAM! several times, detonating the
nuke and killing himself in the process.

Much points wastage, sad to say. Quake is cool.
Exploit weakness is cool. Hypersonic speed is way
cool. Unfortunately, you can't use the three together
in any combination, meaning you're shelling out points
on your team for all those abilities when you can only
use one at a time. His alternating quake/super
strenght makes perfect sense, as every time he yells
Shazam!, lighting falls from the sky. Great DV, just
like Supes, Magog, and WW. That mid-dial outwit will
be handy without a doubt. But for the points, you can
dish out 9pts more for KC Supes, and get a far better
figure."
