Darkside - Crisis
Reviewed 03.07.2008 - Average Rating: 3.75

DrStrange86

Today's review is Darkseid from Crisis

Well, the old on was bit of a bruiser in his day, and everyone loved the Icons E and V, so we have a new greatest evil in the universe.  Can he stand up?

He is a veteran(rare), 210 points, 12 range 1 target, 10 clicks of life, a flier, no team

Attack: Omega Effect: before making a ranged combat attack, he can : half the range and ignore characters and hindering, reduce damage by 2 and have it penetrating, or 0 damage and put piece in any space where darkseid has clear LOF

Defense: All Will Serve Darkseid: Darkseid can use Invuln, Mastermind, and Willpower

Damage: Master Strategist: Darkseid can use outwit and perplex

Speed:  Not very mobile, but phasing gets him where he needs do go

Attack:  Never goes below nine, psy blast is always welcome, and I like the first 2 powers of omega effect, the third one will work better in big games when you have more pieces on your team that can take advantage of the repositioning

Defense:  High, with lots of damage reducers.  I like the fact he can have invuln, willpwer, and mastermind, makes him pretty much immune to any situation if you have someone next to him

Damage:  Outwit and perplex at same time is always welcome, and more outwit works too

The Good:  Big, consistent attack

      Lots of damage

Lots of outwit and some perplex

Lots of cool combos can be pulled off

      Extremely hard to take down

      12 range

The Bad:   Not mobile

     Outwit still hurts him badly

Takes up 2/3 of team in tourny

Feats:   Fortitube might be a must, shellhead and protected work good too

Overall:    Wow, what a beast of a character.  I will say it right now, I like him a lot more than Black Adam, even with the grievous lack of movement powers.  His attack is higher overall, the damage is higher, he has more useful powers all over the dial, and is just a monster with that 12 range.  Also, thanks to OE, he can ignore stealth up to 6 range, which is already awesome.  Also, he can get those assured 2-3 damage hits in on to your enemies imperv-heavy pieces.  I like him a lot and think he might be the best version of Darkseid we had yet (sorry Icons).  In a 300 point tourney, he is risky, but a skilled player could make him work.  He is a shining star in bigger games though, and can easily have a team made around him 400 points and up.

Constructed/Unrestricted:  3.5 / 5

Sealed/Draft:  4 / 5

Overall:  3.5 / 5

ANALYSIS & TIPS:
With 12 range, 11 AV, 18 Impervious and 4 damage with the Perplex-and-Outwit-granting "Master Strategist"
power, Darkseid looks great already. But it's his "Omega Effect" Special Power that makes him especially potent. Its first option, representing the Omega Beams' ability to curve past obstacles, gives him 6 (or 7) range Trick Shot. Option 2 lessens its damage but makes it penetrating. And #3 works a bit like a Telekinesis attack without requiring adjacency.

The best part is that nearly all these effects can be COMBINED. That 75-point Batman is a problem? Use Omega
1+3 to pull him out of hindering and into the open so
your team can see -- or just blast him hard from behind your own meat shield with Omega 1. Can't risk a Fortituded Superman making his Impervious roll? Omega
2 will hit him for a certain 2-4 clicks. The only combos that won't work are 2 + 3, because 3 is a 0 damage attack (but even it can deal damage on a critical hit).

That's not the end of the Special-ness that is the lord of Apokolips. "All Will Serve Darkseid" gives him use of Mastermind, Invulnerability and Willpower after he's pushed or hit past his opening Impervious.

Finally, while his stats and powers about 2/3 through his dial are rather weak, he ends with a final ramping up of his attack and defense to 10 and 19 respectively.

WEAKNESSES:
No move & attack is a problem for one-man-army figures, though his gargantuan range and potent SPs mitigate this weakness for Darkseid. The back half of his dial is considerably more mortal than the front.

FEATS?
What does he need other than FORTITUDE? Not much, and thanks to his long range and ability to shoot past meat shields, he doesn't even need that feat as much as most figs in his weight class. PROTECTED could be especially nasty on his super-Willpower slots, too.

IN SUM:
This guy is the reason why Special Powers were created.

RATING:
4 of 5. No move+attack just keeps him out of the upper echelon.
