Cyborg Superman

DC Origins

Reviewed 05.18.2007

Average Rating: 2.50

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst. 3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Rurouni KJS

Rookie Cyborg Superman

wing speed

133  points

Team: Superman Ally

Keywords: "Metropolis," "Robot"

Range:  8 x 1

DIAL: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10880&unitid=12568&universeid=6

ANALYSIS:

For 133 points, you'd expect more than just one click of 10 Attack Value. You get none: just three of 9 and 8, and a pair of 7s right down the line. That, along with no move+attack powers, stinks. His opening Super Strength doesn't mix well with his opening Energy Shield/Deflection, either. At least it works OK at range, which is how CyberSupes here should be used thanks to his anti-Stealth TA (but too bad he doesn't get Range Combat Expert until his AV slips to 8). If he takes a lot of damage, Mastermind is there to help. Shape Change helps his survivability on both ends of his dial.

FEATS?

CAMOUFLAGE is great on any 'clix with opening Shape Change. IN CONTACT WITH ORACLE is best reserved for figures like him who really need the help.

ETC.

One of four faux Supermen to "reign" while the real Superman was dead, he could join R Steel (Origin) and R Superboy in such a themed team.

IN SUM:

Quite underwhelming, he needs fellow wildcard snipers to leverage his TA (since he'll be stuck at range most of the time) and cheap passengers to use as late-dial Mastermind fodder. That's a lot of points to make him just playable.

RATING: 2.5 of 5. Use in theme teams only.

================================

Experienced Cyborg Superman

wing speed

174 points

Team: Superman Enemy

Keywords: "Robot"

Range:  8 x 1

Archenemy: n/a

DIAL:  http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10881&unitid=12568&universeid=6

ANALYSIS:

Although his AV starts at the same uninspiring level as the Rookie's, the unveiled Experienced sees his stats rise and hold fairly solid for much of his dial. A much more solid piece, Invulnerability, 4 Damage, Exploit Weakness, Psychic Blast and Regeneration all adorn multiple slots.

The downside is the enduring lack of move+attack abilities and the loss of opening Shape Change. You'll push to use it on clicks #2-4 anyway (since his AV rises), but...still. Now a bonafide Superman Enemy, he's going to need a teammate to make use of that already-costly TA's Outwit ability.

FEATS?

AUTOMATIC REGENERATION for his three clicks of the power is mandatory.

IN SUM:

High-point Superman Enemy figs are cumbersome, and E Cyborg Supes is no exception. His stats need to be a tad higher to be the tentpole he's priced to be, especially since he needs a supporting wildcard.

RATING: 2.5 of 5.

Veteran Cyborg Superman

wing speed

220 points

Team: Superman Enemy

Keywords: "Manhunters," "Robot"

Range:  8 x 1

Archenemy: n/a

DIAL: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10882&unitid=12568&universeid=6

ANALYSIS:

The good? He gets Shape Change back on his first click for better damage avoidance. He also starts with his peak AV of 11 and Running Shot, meaning he can finally be offensive. With the requisite teammate in tow to activate his TA, he can be quite the force.

The bad? His stats slide slowly but steadily down his dial, especially his defense numbers. There's no second wind here. And let's not forget that you're probably sinking an additional 25+ points to make his TA work.

FEATS?

CAMOUFLAGE works again as insurance against most range attacks. AUTO REGEN, again will make him a slightly harder KO.

IN SUM:

Same problem as the Experienced, but even more cumbersome. At his price, he needs to be able to handle his weight class, but can't quite do it.

RATING: 2.5 of 5.

Today's review is Cyborg Superman from Origin

He was part of the Death of Superman saga when 4 different people came out saying they were the reincarnated Man of Steel.  He later went on to help Mongul destroy Coast City, turning Hal Jordan into Parallax.  He was recently seen in the new Green Lantern run.  He was the commander of the Manhunters I think.

The best of the three is the Vet

He is 220 points, 8 range 1 target, 10 clicks of life, a flier, no AE, and Superman Enemy

Speed:  Two of running shot and two of phasing to run away…not great but not awful I guess

Attack:  The values aren’t bad, another click of 10 would have been MUCH better.  Why EE on the first click?  Why not Psychic Blast?  ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defense:  Values are kind of low, but the damage reducers and regeneration will make his 10 clicks seem a lot longer

Damage:  Values aren’t bad, aren’t great.  Shape Change is one of my favorite abilities, and exploit weakness isn’t bad either, even though you will probably always be at range with this guy.

The Good:  Near full dial shape change

      Decent attack values

      Long life and damage reducers

      Team could come in handy

      Phasing to run away

The Bad:   Not nearly enough movement

    I wish there was a 10 range

Impervious and Shape change would have made him worth the points

EE with a single target with the running shot…so angry about that

Feats:   Camouflage is a must, keeping him stealthed is key to get him use.  Protected helps him out too.  I find him to be relatively pushable, so using shellhead could be a good call.  Slap on auto regen too, you need to keep him alive as long as you can.  Don’t other with shellhead, you only get two clicks to use it and regen will probably give you more usage.

Overall:    Origin has given us a slew of decent Superman Enemies in a long tradition of suck.  I feel that this guy is not worth usage in 300 point games, but in higher games I see a lot of potential for him.  Carrying around a mister mind with mental shields and compel will really get some good use out of this guy.  Minds perplex and the team outwit will give him some good usage.  On his own, he is not great, but can be a threat.  He is better over the long haul and is less points than Bizarro, and I feel he is better in the long run than Lex Luthor.  For anti-supes teams, he is the one of the ones you NEED on the team.  In regular games, with the right support, he could work.  He is not amazing, but he is a Supes enemy that isn’t awful…and that is saying something.

Constructed/Unrestricted:  2.5 / 5

Sealed/Draft:  2 / 5 (hard to plan to use)

Overall:  2.5 / 5
