Today's review is Mandarin from Avengers

 

Dr. Strange’s old nemesis and one of 3 pieces so far that showcase the new special powers boxes…Mandarin.  He is the Avengers buy it by the brick piece.  Is he worth the 90 dollar investment? Lets see

 

He is an LE, 156 points, 12 range 1 target, 8 clicks of life, a flier, no AE, and no team

Movement – clicks 2,3,4,7,8 are Special

Speed:  Mind control sucks with one target, Left hand of mandarin is cool though, giving you Energy Explosion, Incap, or MC

Attack:  Decent values that get a little too low.  Psy blast is awesome, especially with a huge range.  Right hand of the Mandarin is cool too, giving him Barrier, Force Blast, Quake, Smoke Cloud, and TK

Defense:  Average numbers, I wish it was more willpower though.  Barrier is ridiculous on a piece that will take up half your points and be your main attacker

Damage:  Bad for the points, but Outwit helps, and RCE comes in when you will either be nanobotting or running away.  You wont be hitting anything with a 7 attack

The Good:  12 range

      Tons of useable powers

      Psy blast and Outwit

The Bad:   Incap, Mind Control, EE, Barrier suck with one target

    Not many of the combinations really work

    Barrier for 156 points

    Low damage

    Attack gets low


Feats:   Protected is a must…I really don’t know of too much that works with this guy.  ICWO helps…and I guess Mercenary if you want to give him some team ability


Overall:    At first glance I thought this guy was ridiculous.  At second glance…not so much.  For 156 points, he is not main attacker material.  He is a secondary attacker/ support piece in 600 point games, which is pretty much the only time I would ever really use him.  I never buy bricks though, (I’m not made of money), so I probably won’t have this guy.   He seems like a fun piece to play though, and in the right teams he could probably work.  With all the powers, he seems like he could have potential, but really isn’t that great.  So far, Phantom Girl is the best piece with the new White Boxes.

Unique from Avengers
 
I am back after a weeks vacation! It was much needed and I feel refreshed and ready to go. Now onto the clix. The Mandarin: better than his original version? We'll find out.
 
He is 156 points; Flies; No Team; 12 Range; 1 Bolt

To note: the underlined numbers are for Mandy's special powers. To prevent readers from speeding over to the site I'll just put the stats here.
 
Speed Underlined: Energy Explosion, Incapacitate and Mind Control
Attack Underlined: Barrier, Force Blast, Quake, Smoke Cloud, and Telekinesis
 
 Speed  -- No movement.. *sigh* at least he has a gazillion other powers to use. Mind Control never seems to come in handy for heavy hitters.
 
 Attack  -- Sweet 11 with Psychic Blast and 12 Range! Values really die down quicker than they should but with all those powers it will make up for it.. I think.
 
 Defense  -- If only Willpower could start. A triple dose of 17's works for me. Did anyone else notice Mandarin has Barrier on every single click but one?
 
 Damage  -- The best part of the dial. He is front loaded with Outwit and it will take FIVE clicks to get rid of it. Near-death RCE could really rack up some last chance clicks.
 
 Sculpt  -- Where's Mandarin's oranges? (Only kidding)
 
 Romanco's Breakdown
~ All these powers are making my reviews based less on numbers
~ Barrier = no damage reduction
~ 12 Range
~ Hard to move around
 
Mandarin is a good example of how the new clix system won't work well. He costs over 150 points and is obviously not worth it. One big hit and you're stuck with 8 attack and 15 defense. But why 150 points? THE POWERS. The options seem almost endless but are they worth it? Not in my eyes. Hopefully the rest of this set won't be carried away like him.
 
I give Mandarin a 2/5.
