Harry Potter for the Game Boy Color
Walkthru

This walkthru was created by Wicked Racer. -

Welcome to the Harry Potter for GBC. It is a very fun game and will keep you playing for hours and hours to master it. Once you start the game, choose your language, and then three different books appear. Each one allows you to play as a separate game identity. I started all three and tried to work my way through the game in different ways. Soon, I mainly played one book and have been through the game four times now. The game plays very much like the book, more than the movie, since Peeves the Ghost is a major annoyance. The object of the game is to go to Hogwarts, learn to be the best Wizard you can, and help your House win the school competition.

You start the game in front of the wand shop in Diagon Alley. Follow Hagrid in and get your wand. It comes with two spells. Use them often and you get the more advanced levels of the spells which do more damage. Now go outside. A boy gives you some Wizard Cards, a Folio Magi to organize them and a Folio Tripiculus to use to cast spells when you have the right combinations. Later, at Hogwarts, the same boy gives you more card combinations as you progress through the game. You find cards and combinations in hidden locations around the game usually by having Harry face the top of the screen and pushing the A Button. There are other potions and candies hidden too, so search all over. You also get the cards inside packs of chocolate frogs (like the book) and by fighting battles. The blobs between building are magical experiences waiting for you to fight a rat, spider or worse as the game progresses. The blobs come in two sizes. Most are small and contain one to three opponents. Some are big and have a

I like to explore the shops and build up my level by fighting the weak rats and bugs in the alleys and between buildings. You heal yourself up by going to the store with the band aid on it and drinking a potion for free.

When you are stronger, say level 10, follow Hagrid to the Bank. He is inside at the top. Go into the dungeon with Hagrid and a goblin, but you fall and lose them. Your vault is at the very back of the maze so keep fighting rats and looking in holes for cards. Eventually you will see a big blob. Fight it and talk to Hagrid. Go inside your vault and get a little money and a list of school supplies. Fight your way back out of the bank and buy your supplies at the different shops. I spend a lot of chocolate frogs for cards. The clothes you can wear and they give you more power, protection, stamina etc. Follow the instructions on your screen. Later you buy better clothes that give you more power. You also can find belts and boots after you fight strong monsters.

After you buy everything and fight everything, heal yourself up and then talk to Hagrid again. Then you move to the train station and then onto the Hogwarts Express. Talk to everybody. Hermione gives you a good spell. Soon you can buy more treats. Then Malfoy comes and you fight him. He gives you a card combination, but it is not a good one. Then walk around some more. The train stops and you get off and onto boats.

The boats float by monsters who attack as you go to the castle. Fight all the time and save often. The more you fight, the more points you get for experience and money, and your spells become stronger.

The boats land and you try to follow Hagrid into the dungeon maze of Hogwarts. Look for cards and fight. After going around in circles for a while you cross a bridge and then start almost over again. Do it faster a second time because you found all the cards, and after you cross the bridge, a stairway to the top appears to take you into the castle. A big blob with a knight inside is your last battle.

Go inside and get sorted into Gryffindor. Their table is on the right at the bottom of the room. Then try to find your rooms. Gryffindor is on the 7th floor. Explore each floor and learn what you can. The card trading club is on the fifth floor in the lower right-hand corner, near the stairs. The Wesley Twins also sell clothes and treats there. Save your money to buy the improved clothes which give you more power. The first aid station is in the room with the cross on the door. Heal yourself there.

At the door to Gryffindor, a big painting of a fat lady, you find out that you need the secret pass word. Talk to others and they tell you to find Nearly Headless Nick. He is on the 6th floor. He wants a tie to hold his head on with. Keep talking to him until he tells you exactly where you can find it. Go down to the entrance hall and face the gargoyles and press A and one of them gives you the tie. Go back up to Nick. Trade the tie for the password, go inside Gryffindor and go to bed. You have classes tomorrow.

The first thing you need to do in the morning is to go to the Potions class. It is in the entrance hall, thru the door at the top left. Go to the door to the left. The door to the right goes to Snape's office. Straight ahead is the passageway to a secret passage to the 5th floor. Remember to fight lots of battles to get points and money and also save your game often.

In the class room go talk to Snape and he sits you down. Neville is hurt in an explosion and Snape sends you out to find stuff to help Neville. Go out the class to the main lobby and out the doors to the outside. Go down and to the left to Hagrid's Hut. You can find two sets of Beetle eyes in his yard. One in the top left corner, the other in next to his hut on the lower left side. You find stuff by facing the top of the screen and pushing the A Button when you face it. Then go straight up to the green houses and talk to Prof. Sprout. Fight some snakes in her garden for fangs. Then talk to her again for some house points. Then go to Snape's office across from the class room. In the office on the top wall is a big snake painting. At the head you find the boomslang skin. (If it's not there, you might have to restart your game. A lot of people have had this problem, so I think it's some sort of glitch. From what I've heard it appears fine the second time through.) Return to class. Snape gives six points but always takes one off for being slow.

After you give the stuff to Snape, he gives you a list of classes. It doesn't matter what order you do the classes in, but one requires you to have advanced spells to make it easier, so I do that one last. Fight lots of battles to get stronger and look for hidden cards and stuff.

Transfiguration.

Location: - 1st floor, the door on the top left.

A candle has been transfigured into a purple rabbit. You need to find it to be given the Incendio spell which burns stuff like plants and trolls.

Go down to the entrance hall and talk to Percy who will tell you a purple rabbit has just hopped out of the door. Go outside and then to the left. The rabbit should be close. Catch it, and return to the transfiguration classroom for the reward.

Herbology

Location: - Greenhouses outside (where you talked to Sprout about the snakes)

Enter the far left greenhouse, and talk to Ron (far left table, at the top).

You are given an Encyclopedia, and a Herb List. You need to find the six herbs on the list. Otherwise, she takes points off.

Here are some places I found the plants.

Dried Nettles - Right hand potted plant inside the door.

Mandrake Root - In the garden outside the class, bottom right-hand corner.

Dittany - Follow the trail down from the entrance and look in the bushes to the right.

Wormwood - Follow the trail down to the main gate and look in the bush to the left.

Aconite - There is a bush in the bottom right of the Hogwarts grounds. There are all sorts of other plants and stuff for potions too.

Asphodel Root - Near the quidditch field, middle to the right of the main trail, across from Hagrid's Hut.

Return to the greenhouse after finding all six of these herbs, and Professor Sprout will send you to Snape to collect two potion recipes. Snape is in his Office.

Broom Flight Class.

Location: Outside. Exit through the main doors and take the right-hand path (as you face the game-not as harry walks down the path), then the right-hand fork, and the right-hand fork once again. Neville will break his wrist and drop the Remembrall. Draco will steal it and fly away. You need to catch him. Keep your speed up and try to avoid as many obstacles as possible. As soon as you can, fly into Draco. You can return to this area later to race against an owl. You get house points for being quick.

Charms

Location: - Second floor. Doorway at the top of the screen in the middle. You follow the wand motions that the Professor shows you to may things float in air. Use a pencil and paper to copy down the wand movements Flitwick uses and get a new spell - Wingardium Leviosa. This spell doesn't seem to do much, maybe make the opponent miss?

Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Location: - Third Floor. Doorway at the top of the screen, on the left side. Just before entering, Peeves will curse you with Mucus ad nauseam. Enter the room and talk to Quirrell who will tell you to find the counter curse. First of all go into the library and talk to Mrs. Pinch. (Enter through the door opposite the defense against the dark arts classroom and go down the stairs. Go to the bottom of the screen at the middle. She should be sitting at a desk here). She tells you the counter curse book is missing. Exit the library from the door at the bottom near Mrs. Pinch. Peeves will appear and tell you the book you want might be being studied by a muggle. So go to the Muggle studies classroom. This is on the 5th floor, in the top left hand room. Enter and Peeves will tell you to try watching TV. Search the TV to enter a hidden chamber. Fight the troll or big rat in here to receive the counter curse book. The best spell to use against this opponent is the strongest you have. Go into your item list

History of Magic: Hardest test.

Location: - 4th floor, door on the left-hand side at the top of the screen. Enter the room and talk to Neville to wake Prof. Binns up. Binns will give you a pass to go back to Diagon Alley to find to person selling the Circe card. Exit the classroom and Hagrid will be there and will take you to Diagon Alley.

You start again outside the wand shop. There are different items on sale in most of the shops now, so it may be a good time to buy new items. If you go toward Gringotts', the man selling the card will be next to Hagrid. Talk to him and pay 10 Sickles for the card. If you accidently spend all your money on frogs, Hagrid lends you some. The only catch is you have to go to his vault in Gringotts' to get it. Follow him into Gringotts' and speak to him again. The manager will show you to his vault. There is a trap. Kill the rat or troll in there to receive the card. Fight other battles to build up your points. Return to the lobby and exit the bank. Talk to the man again, and Hagrid will take you back to Hogwarts. Talk to Binns to end the lesson.

Then go to the dinner hall for the next series. Remember to save your game often. After finishing your first day of classes, you go to eat in the dining hall. Malfoy challenges you to a duel for embarrassing him at the broom class.

Midnight duel.

With Ron, Hermione, and Neville go down to the 3rd floor, avoid all of the teachers. The trophy room is at the bottom of the screen in the middle. Walk to the left end of the room, until Filch and his cat Mrs. Norris come looking for you. Exit through the back door. Exit this room by sticking to the right side wall and going through the door to go out into the main hallway. Where you will all hide in a previously locked room and meet "Fluffy." Now return to Gryffindor again using only the stairs and avoiding the teachers.

Rescue Hermione from the Troll.

Outside the dining hall with Ron for Halloween, you insult Hermione who runs off to the girl’s bathroom. Professor McGonagall asks you to find her. Talk to the girl on the left-hand side of the entrance hall who tells you where she is. Quirrell comes and says that a troll is in the school. Go up to the first floor and enter the door the troll goes through. The best spell to use here is Verdimillous which should be at least Duo by now. Another good one to use is Mucus Ad Nauseam which you learned from Peeves when he cursed you.

Find your Christmas Presents.

It is now Christmas! So what does Peeves do? Steals your presents! Go to the 6th floor and enter the door near the stairs you came down. Walk along this corridor to the room at the end. Search the top chest on the right-hand side of the room to find your presents. Filch catches you and drags you off the Professor McGonagall who, since its Christmas only deducts one house point. Return to Gryffindor and open your presents. Flute, coin, and the Invisibility Cloak.

Explore Hogwarts at Night.

Most of the classroom doors are locked. The entire main floor is open, except the door outside. Go down to the 2nd floor and enter the library. (Door above the stairs on the right-hand side) Go down the spiral staircase and enter the restricted section. There are at least two important spells and a potion recipe in the books to find. It is difficult to describe where to find them. One spell is in the middle of the back row of restricted books on the left hand side. A potion is at the end of the front row of this section. The other spell is at the end of the second row that form the middle of the section where Filch usually stands during the day. You need to be careful since there appears to be alarms when you walk to a certain point or touch certain books. When the alarm goes off, Mrs. Pinch blocks the closest door. If you try to escape by the other door on the main floor, Filch catches you. You need to go up the spiral stars in the library and out the 2nd floor. If you try to go down stairs, Sna

On the same floor as the cat blocking the stairs, (5th) then will be a new little hallway on the right side. You hide in it and listen to Snape and Flinch. Down that hallway is a special Mirror and Dumbledore. You can’t enter this room until you get caught in the library.

Norbert Hatches.

Go to Hagrid's Hut and enter. The dragon hatches and Hagrid sends you to catch five chickens. The best way is to get near them and press the A. To collect a chicken, you have to battle them. For each battle, you only receive one chicken, even if you fight three. This is a good time to level up your spells and gain points because you get a lot of points even though the chickens barely hurt you. You can keep battling them for as long as you like. Once at least five have been

caught, return to Hagrid's Hut.

After a couple of days, you return to Hagrid's Hut and catch the escaped Norbert. This is the same as the Owl chase on your broom only with different graphics.

Take Norbert to the astronomy tower.

Go to Hagrid's hut with Hermione and enter. Collect Norbert and take him back up to the 7th floor, near Gryffindor. The astronomy tower is through the top door on the left-hand side of the floor. Watch Malfoy get caught. Follow the corridor round and through the doorway at the end. They take Norbert and you get caught. You lose 150 house points. (No escaping it. Part of the book)

Injured unicorn.

Go down to the main entrance hall. Now go down to the path below Hagrid's hut where the others are waiting. Soon you will be in the forest. There seems to be only one way through, but a lot of dead ends. You follow the path, going down most of the time. The story is exactly like the book. Finally you will come across the unicorn, see Voldemort, and then you will need to return to the Castle. You will then need to return to Gryffindor.

Find Dumbledore

Actually, you can't find him since he is gone to London. Go talk to everyone. Heal yourself up. If you didn't do it already, search the library for potions, cards, and spells. Go to the 1st floor and speak to Prof. McGonagall who is standing in between the two sets of stairs at the bottom of the screen. Now return to Gryffindor, collecting the card combinations on the way (5th floor, bottom left). I would sell the extra herbs and items that you can to the Wesley Twins and buy extra Potions and Pepper Up. The final challenge awaits so go heal yourself again.

Forbidden Corridor

>From the commons area of Gryffindor, Harry, Ron and Hermione walk down to the 3rd floor. I never saw any teachers, but there are the usual blobs waiting to battle you. Make sure you are fully healed with lots of potions. The door to the forbidden corridor is open so they assume Snape is ahead of them. After putting Fluffy to sleep, they drop into the Devil's Snare. Use your Incendio tria on the large plant and duo on the smaller ones. Save your game and then walk up and to the right to the next door.

The next challenge is the flying keys, just like the book. Use Ron's broom to fly to the very top and touch the glowing key in the middle or the area. It does not move. Save and heal yourself before entering the next room.

The next challenge is the chess men, a knight, rook and the king. I used a combination of the spells on them and knocked them out fairly easy.

The next challenge is the mixing of a potion. Save before you start because if you fail to solve it, you get sent back to the entrance of the corridor. The first time I tried this I needed more than 30 chances. The task is to pick which cauldron to put which three herbs. There are four choices in each group. You pick four, say: Brass cauldron, mandrake root, unicorn horn, and nettles. Then press the A button. Dots appear to show how many (if any) of the four are correct. You then substitute cauldrons and herbs, trying to pick the four correct items. Once you get all four correct, then you use that potion to pass thru the fire to the final challenge. SAVE and HEAL yourself. You are attacked once you enter.

The final opponent follows the book and movie. The first stage of the attack is a weaker person. Use Mucus ad nauseam if you have that spell, then loco mortatis. Have a pepper up to give yourself 75 magic points, then start fighting. The mucus drains the opponent and you beat him easily.

The final battle is harder because this enemy can attack twice for your single spell. Freeze them with petrificus and use mucus. Use the strongest attacks and heal yourself often. I was knocked out very close to winning when the enemy landed a 200 point attack when he only had about 10 points remaining. Since I had saved, I turned off the game and returned to the potions room, ready to fight again.

Once you win, Dumbledore saves you. Gryffindor gets a bunch of points, maybe enough to win the house cup. You might get the Harry Potter card which allows you to use a card combination called Full Enhancement. Then the game starts over. You are back in front of the wand shop with Hagrid in Diagon Alley. But you still have your previous level and money. After you get the Folios, you can use the card combination, Full Enchantment to learn all of the spells again. The next trip through the game will be easily. Look for all the cards and potion recipes you can. It is a fun game.
