Hello again my fellow Kaijudo Duel Masters! Welcome to Pojo.com's Card of the Day for July 23, 2013! Today we have a card that was seen in Clash of the Duel Masters as well as the new Triple Strike deck. Let's get right into today's review of Soul Vortex!

Name: Soul Vortex
Civilization:
Darkness/Fire
Type: Spell
Race:
N/A
Level:
5
Power:
N/A
Flavor Text: The flame's whispers are madness.
Rarity: Rare
Set Number: 102/110 l 7CLA

Abilities:

(This card enters your mana zone tapped.)
Shieldblast.jpgShield Blast- (Instead of putting this spell into your hand from a broken shield, you may cast it for free.)
Banish target enemy creature that has power 3000 or less.
Choose a creature in your discard pile that is level 4 or less and return it to your hand.

Soul Vortex is the first Dual-Civilization spells for Darkness and Fire. There was a great deal of speculation about what the card was going to do before the set was released and I think this card had a lot more potential than the effect that was given to it.

Vortex allows you to banish a creature your opponent controls as long as it has 3000 or less power and then you can choose a creature from your discard pile and add it to your hand as long as it is a level 4 or less. These are the biggest constraints on this card and will likely take away from its playability in the constructed environment.

With the introduction of Clash of the Duel Masters, there were a lot of new creatures that were seeing play, specifically: Aqua Strider, Fullmetal Lemon, and Sword Horned. All of these low costing creatures have one thing in common, they each have more than 3000 power. Unless you're playing against a Rush deck or some other variant that uses low power creatures, this card will often miss the first effect. Secondly, we have the recursion ability. This effect would have made the card a little more redeemable if it had left out the part where you have to return a level 4 or less to your hand from your discard pile. So instead of giving us Rock Bite and Dark Return in one card they actually weakened it. Who really has been playing Rock Bite anyway? I suppose I could see some reasonable use for Heat Seekers on occasion but not so much this card.

The other downside of this card is that it's a whopping five mana to play. For that cost I would expect this card to banish an untapped creature and return a creature from your discard pile to your hand. Actually... if it did have that effect, they may want to increase the cost by one. Regardless, I have not seen this card successfully used as of yet but there may be a time when it may be more relevant, however, now it's just not that viable in my opinion.

Ratings:

Constructed: 2.25/5.00 (There are better options than using this card. Stick with Grip of Despair or even Death Smoke. If you're looking for recursion, try out Dark Return or even Megaria the Collector.)
Limited: 3.50/5.00 (In limited you should see a little more in the department of smaller creatures. Decent removal and it will often give you back a creature that was banished a turn or two earlier.)

Stop back again tomorrow when we continue to look at more cards from the Triple Strike deck! Make sure to check out my channel for new content and until next time my fellow Kaijudo Duel Masters, keep calm and game on!

Card Name: Soul Vortex

Mana Cost: 5

Civilization: Darkness/Fire

Race: N/A

Card Type: Spell (Shield Blast)

Power: N/A

Rarity: Rare

Card Number: 102/110, 22/22

Card Set: 7CLA, 8TRI

Card Text: (This card enters your mana zone tapped.)

Shield Blast (Instead of putting this spell into your hand from a broken shield, you may cast it for free.)

Banish target enemy creature that has power 3000 less.

Choose a creature in your discard pile that is level 4 or less and return it to your hand.

Soul Vortex is the dual civilization spell for the Darkness and Fire Civilizations from Clash of the Duel Masters.  It can be had in Skycrusher’s Might x1 and the Elite Series: Triple Strike x2 in foil.  It is a fairly easy card to get, but is not one of the better dual civilization spells that we currently have.

“Banish target enemy creature that has power 3000 less”, is the same text as Rock Bite.  So for one more mana Soul Vortex can function the same way Rock Bite does.  This card is great if you are going against a rush deck where you will face a lot of 3000 or less creatures and would need more than 3 copies of Rock Bite.

The second power on this card is “Choose a creature in your discard pile that is level 4 or less and return it to your hand.”  Darkness already has many discard pile retrieval options.  This can be great for Fire to be able to get a banished creature back to their hand.

The second power is a combination of Dark Return and Return from Beyond.  It has the attribute of Dark Return in allowing you to return a creature to your hand.  Return from Beyond provides the level 4 or less restriction.  Soul Vortex got the worst of both of these cards.  This card could have been much more useful and I still think it would not be over powered at 5 mana.

I feel like this card is perfect for rush decks to utilize.  Rush decks usually suffer from the lack of resources in your hand.  This card allows you to retrieve one of your creatures that was banished, which gives you another card to work with.  This card can also banish a creature from your opponent’s side of the board so you can focus on breaking shields and swinging for game asap.  I feel this card fits into a rush deck nicely.  I would not run it in a darkness deck because so many other better cards are available.  I know the two effects from one card are nice.  I believe they both don’t stack up enough to make this card worthwhile for darkness.

Constructed: 2.75/5

Limited: 2/5
