Happy Friday everyone! I hope
you all enjoyed this week of Card of the Day! I plan
on stopping out to my local card shop today to play
some Kaijudo and also hope to bring you guys some
matches to post on my YouTube page; make sure you
check it out! Today we're reviewing Spy Mission,
let's get started!
Name: Spy Mission
Civilization: Water
Type:
Spell

Flavor Text:
Hydro spies scout out enemies at the speed of
thought.
Rarity:
Uncommon
Set Number:
17/55 I 3RIS;
9/43
I 1TVR
Abilities:
Shield
Blast (Instead of putting this spell into your
hand from a broken shield, you may cast it for
free.) Draw 2 cards.
Spy Mission is one of the few
effective draw cards we have in this game. Generally
people tend to favor Logos Scan over this card since
it costs one less mana to cast. However, let's look
at the big difference between the cards... they each
have the same effect to draw two cards but one of
these is a shield blast. If this gets broken, you
get two free cards; if Logos scan gets broken as a
shield, you have to pay the three mana to cast it.
In the long scheme of things, this is a nice shield
blast to have but does nothing to deal with your
opponent's creatures in the battle zone which can be
rough at times.
To establish control over your
opponent you generally need to either strip them of
their resources or overwhelm them with yours. Spy
Mission can do that if you run it and Logos Scan in
the same deck. Keep in mind though that you
sacrifice your summon for your turn four or five
usually when you play this card from your hand. I
believe this is why Logos is more preferred, since
on most people's turn three they're lucky to have a
blocker in the battle zone; although you will have
the occasional Neuron to deal with.
Another thing to keep in mind
when running cards that provide you with advantage
over your opponent, watch out for Skull Shatter! In
a control mirror match the game may generally be
pretty slow starting up and both players are
building up cards in their hands. A well timed Skull
Shatter can basically say, "Game Over". Often times
you'll lose 3-5 cards off of this card, but that's
not to say you couldn't lose more!
Overall it's a decent card that
gives you more cards and can dig you further into
your deck to find answers to problems you're
currently dealing with or set up key combos for your
deck. Personally my deck is fairly balanced out and
I'm not worried about drawing specific cards to get
me out of a jam. Believe it or not, I would actually
prefer to use this card over Crystal Memory in my
current build! Memory is an amazing card when you
need that specific card to win, however, I would
rather have two cards to set up more plays than just
one. Plus with all of the other draw power in Logos
Scan, Seneschal, and Neuron, I tend to get to the
cards I need; Spy Mission just gets me there
quicker.
Ratings:
Constructed: 3.75/5.00 (Drawing cards is always considered a good
thing, especially when you get them for free! Logos
is generally the more accepted draw spell but this
should be a realistic option when constructing your
deck that uses the Water Civilization as one of its
focuses.)
Limited: 3.00/5.00 (Drawing is good in Limited and it's a shield
blast, however, there's always the chance you could
deck yourself out if you use too much draw power and
you waste your turn drawing instead of summoning
creatures leaving you open to attack.)
See you all next week when we
start looking to the future at some new and upcoming
cards! See you then!
