Hello again my fellow Kaijudo
Duel Masters out there! We’re taking a look at the
top ten cards from 2013 and today is one of my
personal favorites! Let’s take a look
at number four on the list: Queen Kalima.
Name: Queen Kalima
Civilization: Darkness
Type: Creature
Race: Monarch/Dark Lord
Level: 10
Power: 16000
Flavor Text: N/A
Rarity: Super Rare
Set Number: S3/S10 l 9SHA
Abilities:
Triple Breaker (This creature breaks 3
shields.)
Gaze into the Abyss- When this creature enters
the battle zone, you may put the top 3 cards of your
deck into your discard pile. For each Darkness card
put into your discard pile this way, your opponent
chooses one of his or her creatures in the battle
zone. Banish those creatures.
Reanimate- Whenever this creature attacks,
choose a creature in your discard pile and return it
to your hand.
Darkness Monarch- Each of your other Darkness
creatures gets +4000 power.
This card didn’t get the love
that it deserved when it first came out and was
outshined by people using Eternal Haven as their
main strategy. A lot of players who did use this
card were focusing on mixing it in with a bunch of
different civilizations and they were lucky to get
one or two hits off with Kalima’s effect. It wasn’t
until I ran a mono-dark version of the deck that it
really started taking off (*insert a tooting of
one’s own horn here*). After my appearance in the
finals of the New Holland KMC, others started
replicating the deck and making their own slight
variations. Kalima appeared in the top eight slots
of Rhode Island, California, and multiple other
venues. When it came time to the Winter
Championships it was no different. People started
using Water/Dark/Light in their builds and started
including Reverberate to restore the resources they
previously used or lost.
I think what
really made the mono-darkness deck successful was
that it had a 100% success rate with Kalima’s
effect. Being able to auto-kill up to three cards is
just too good not to use and is the closest thing we
have in this game to a “board wipe.” If you combo
this card with Mark of Kalima, you have an
additional line of spells that can wipe two
creatures off the board for a measly eight mana. In
a direr situation, you can bring out Queen Kalima on
turn eight to get rid of three creatures and set
yourself up to use the Reanimate ability for next
turn.
Speaking of Reanimate… this
effect can become really ridiculous very quickly if
you happen to have another copy of Kalima in your
discard pile. Unless you don’t have any shields, you
can freely swing in and not worry about anything
your opponent plays since you can kill three
creatures next turn! You can also come up with some
fun combos involving Kalima and Squillace Scourge so
you’ll never truly run out of resources when Squilly
discards both players’ hands.
Kalima was, and is, the best
strategy against Eternal Haven. She can easily bring
the game back in your favor after it looks like
you’re going to lose. Any card that can get rid of
three cards at once and give you a 16000 power
Triple Breaker, etc, etc, should never be taken
lightly. Expect to see a lot more of Kalima in the
future!
Constructed: 4.75/5.00
(In a mono-dark deck, this card is truly the queen
of the castle. Very few cards can eliminate the
amount of threats on board like Kalima can. Kalima
is the definition of a game changer.)
Limited: 2.50/5.00 (Often times this card
will take too long to set up and will be very
unreliable when using her effect due to all the
multi-civilizations in the set.)
Make sure to stop by again
tomorrow for number four on our countdown! Until
next time my fellow Kaijudo Duel Masters, keep calm
and game on!
