  Ghost Touch

Base Set

Date Reviewed: 7.7.04

Constructed Average Rating: 3.85
Limited Average Rating: 3.3

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale

5 is the highest rating.

Gordon Kane Ghost Touch -- This card gives you something to do a 2 mana - something that Darkness doesn't have much to do besides cast a Marrow Ooze Turn 1 and a Writhing Bone Ghoul Turn 2. The problem during the Base Set run was that there was just this one discard spell and one creature that caused discard. However, with the arrival of Evo, Horrid Worm and Dark Titan Maginn supported the discard theme. As a Shield Trigger, Ghost Touch can wreak havoc in the mid-game or the late game. Parner the discard with bounce, and you can bounce annoying cards off the battle zone and then Ghost Touch them out of the opponent's hand.

Ghost Touch

For two mana both players lose a card. At first this looks like a waste of mana, because you are trading one card from your hand for one card from your opponent's hand. Darkness decks do better once the opponent is topdecking (drawing one card from the top of their deck). This is because Darkness decks can usually only counter about one or two cards per turn.  Ghost Touch is a card that causes your opponent to topdeck sooner.

I don't like Ghost Touch, because it has the potential to kill a key card from your opponent's hand. I like it, because it keeps your opponent from playing multiple cards per turn, and because it keeps your opponent from wanting to hold cards in his/her hand during the late game. Why hold a card in your hand only to have it Ghost Touched? Why not play it now?

Final Rating: 4

Limited: 2 This card is only good for control decks. It is hard to make a control deck out of a draft.

Ghost Touch- Darkness Civilization, 2 mana, and “You opponent discards a card at random from his hand.”

Ah, darkness.  My favorite civilization.  If I were to run any mono color deck it would be darkness.  This card is almost staple material.  If it weren’t for Death Smoke and Terror Pit, it probably would be.  I personally try to use this if my deck has Horrid Worm in it, just for that extra control element.  This card, in my opinion, is under-costed.  If you save these for late game, you can just decimate a deck that relies on evos.  Discarding a card is a great thing.  This card gets bonus points for being a shield trigger, I mean there are only a select few cards that wouldn’t benefit from being shield trigger, such as Diamond Cutter.

In review, this card is great.  I mean if it were only 4 mana for 2 cards and still shield trigger we would have the best darkness card, but alas it is still a 2 mana for 1 card, which is still playable.

Constructed-4.5/5:  Good card if you are going for control

Limited-5/5: If you are using black you probably won’t get something better than this.
