It is a 2 dimensional fighting game that makes use of a split screen to let the fighters travel great distances from one another. When the characters go more than screen distance apart, a diagonal line appears in the center of the screen, allowing each side to scroll independently. The game also involves many fireball attacks. A giant fireball attack thrown from a distance far enough so that the screen is split, will do more damage than if thrown from close range, and look more impressive also. You fight single round matches, but your character may have two or more health bars worth of life. There is also a power bar for each fighter which you must charge up in order to perform some of the energy attacks. The bigger the attack, the more power it probably needs. Another unique thing about the Dragonball series of fighting games is the use of two planes to fight on. With the press of a button, your character is able to jump up into the sky and float, or land and fight on the ground. The screen will split automatically if the characters are on different planes from one another. This makes it easier to dodge certain attacks. Instead of having to rely on just jumping over fireballs, now you can take to the skies. Because of the distance you can travel and places that you can go, there is no time limit on the matches. You have eleven different fighters to choose from. Each fighter has upwards of twelve or more different moves or attacks. Although the back of the box says that it is six button compatible, it is not. You use one button for punch, one for kick, one for floating/landing, but the fourth is used only for random select on the character select screen. If anyone can figure out a way to put the energy attacks onto their own button, (without the use of an external device) please let me know. Now on to the F.A.Q. Dragonball Z for the Sega Genesis and Megadrive A F.A.Q. by Henry LaPierre Turning the power on brings up the title screen. Pressing start on the title screen brings you to a selection screen. The screen in English would look like this: Dragonball Z (the name of the series the game is based on) Game Mode (choose one of the following three choices) Story (fight all but 2 characters, dialog between rounds) Versus (1p.vs.com., 1p.vs.2p., com.vs.com.) Options (change certain game settings) Choosing options brings you to the OPTION 1 board. Pressing the A or C buttons advances the options boards while Option 1 is highlighted, B reverses. Option 1 is the controller configuration screen. player 1 player 2 ?.....punch .....? (assign button) A = default ?.....kick .....? (assign button) B = default ?.....float/land.....? (assign button) C = default background music.............on/off (on = default) radar...............type A/type B (A = small dots,B = large dots) End Option 2 board:settings difficulty............easy, normal, severe, super (normal = default) continues.............0-9 help commands.........on/off (on = default) music test............14 different music samples sound test............00-53 different sounds End Command Help (option board 3) character's name (Son Gokou is the default) all documented moves for the above named character Scroll through the character names for the one you'd like to know the moves for. Scroll down through the moves for that character. The lists contain all but 3 or 4 of each characters moves. Arrow diagrams will show you how to perform the moves. In case you don't know the characters by their Japanese written names, they appear in this order: Son Gokou, Son Gohan, Piccolo Diamoah, Vegeta, Trunks, Cell, Artificial Human #18, Kulilin, Freeza, Recoom, and Ginew. Story Mode In this mode one player fights against the computer. You must fight all but two of the characters. You get the ending of the character you were using when you beat this mode. Versus mode There are three different versus modes: 1 player vs. the computer:choose your character and the computers 1 player vs. 2 player:you verse a friend computer vs. computer:choose 2 characters you would like to see fight Once you have picked which mode you'd like to play, you are brought to the character selection screen. The characters appear in this order on this screen: Son Gokou Son Gohan Piccolo Diamoah Vegeta Trunks Cell Artificial Human #18 Kulilin Freeza Recoom Ginew Hitting the X button on the character select screen causes a random select. After the characters are selected in any versus mode, you will be brought to the BATTLE OPTIONS screen. Battle options screen From this screen you can change a few of the battle settings. player 1 player 2 start #wins #losses #wins #losses background (selectable) music (selectable) life meter (50-350) power meter (0-150) During the match: The following are some of the things that you can do during a match: Blocking:hold straight back on the directional pad to block high to mid range attacks. Hold down/back on the directional pad to block low attacks. Doubling up:you can perform the motions for a second move while the first move is bieng done, so that it happens right after. Offscreen:some attacks will knock the opponent off the screen. When this happens the character will jump back onto the screen by themselves. Meteos:all meteos must be performed from throwing range, unless noted. Hitting pause:this brings up the help commands and the controller configure. When dizzy:from expending too much power, rotate the directional pad to get your power back faster. Powering up:hold the punch and kick buttons together, your character will flare with energy. This charges up your powerbar. Alternate level when close:hold back on the directional pad and press the float/land button. Dashing:tap the directional pad twice and hold it in the direction that you want to dash. Grappling:when two characters dash together until they collide, they will lock their hands together and grapple. When in a grapple, rapidly tap back on the directional pad to try and break your opponents grasp. To try and throw your opponent out of the grapple, rapidly tap the punch button. Throws:to throw your opponent, get next to them and hold the directional pad towards and press the punch button. Landing from throws:perform one of these motions as soon as your opponent grabs you to throw you. Tap the directional pad towards your opponent twice. This causes you to float back down from the throw unharmed. Tap the directional pad away from your opponent twice. This causes you to turn around in mid air and come diving back at your opponent. You can attack while this is happening. Attacking while your opponent is down:although you can hit your opponent while they are knocked down, they will take no damage:( After a versus match you are given three choices: Next match (same mode, choose characters again) Rematch (straight to match, same characters, no battle options) End (back to the title screen) Character Moves Listing Key: A = punch B = kick Charge = hold the directional pad 2 seconds To = directly from last direction to the next direction Son Gokou back to forward+A..................fireball charge down, to back+A.............3 fast fireballs charge down, to forward+A..........fast invisible fireball forward to back to forward+A.......blinding light down to back+A.....................dashing elbow smash down/back to up/forward+B..........jumping kick half circle forward+B..............4 hit spinning kick attack forward to down+B(while jumping)...flaming dive kick forward to back to forward+B.......fast dash forward forward to down+B..................slide kick half circle back+A.................kamehameha (giant fireball) down to back to forward+A..........super kamehameha (2nd giant fireball) half circle back to forward+B......meteo attack Son Gohan back to forward+A..................fireball charge down, to forward+A..........fast invisible fireball forward to back to forward+A.......ground energy wave half circle forward+A..............4 hit running punches attack down to forward+A..................flaming punch half circle forward+B..............5 hit kick attack forward to down+B(while jumping)...diving rapid kick attack forward to down+B..................slide kick forward to back to forward+B.......fast dash forward half circle forward to back+A......masenkou (giant fireball) down to back to forward+A..........kamehameha (2nd giant fireball) half circle back to forward+B......meteo attack Piccolo Diamoah back to forward+A..................fireball back to down+A.....................energy drain attack forward to back to forward+A.......ground energy wave down to back+A.....................dashing elbow smash back to down+B.....................jumping knee attack forward to back to forward+B.......double flaming streak kick forward to down+B(while jumping)...diving rapid kick attack forward to down+B..................slide kick down to back to forward+A..........masenkousenpa (giant fireball) half circle back+A.................giant energy ball (2nd giant fireball) half circle forward to back+B......meteo attack Vegeta back to forward+A..................fireball charge down, to back+A.............3 fast fireballs charge down, to forward+A..........homing fireball down to forward+A..................ground energy explosion down to forward+B..................jumping double flame kick down to back+A.....................reverse shoulder smash back to down+A.....................punch into the air, punch to ground forward to down+B..................slide kick half circle forward to back+A......big bang attack (giant fireball) down to back to forward+A..........final flash (2nd giant fireball) half circle back to forward+B......meteo attack* *Vegeta's meteo can only be done when he has 1/4 life and full power. Defending yourself from the giant fireball attacks: from a distance great enough so that the screen splits, you can throw the giant fireballs and the screen will scroll to show just the character performing the attack. This will quickly be followed by the screen panning to show just the character who may be hit by the blast. To defend yourself against the giant fireballs, perform one of the following motions as soon as the screen starts to pan towards your character. If the screen finishing panning before you do the motion, it's too late, you will be hit. #1 up/forward to down/back+A........deflect it away #2 up, then down to forward+A.......warps you to the alternate level #3 down to back to forward+A........this shoots it back at opponent #4 back to forward+A................forms an energy bubble shield* * only Artificial Human #18 can perform this defensive motion. To defend yourself against a giant fireball thrown from close range (non-split screen), just block normally, jump over it, or go to the alternate plane before it shoots. Various Codes: Turbo Mode:hold A+B on controller one, turn on the power to your Genesis. When the screen with the large picture of Gokou standing over the other ten characters appears, hit start (while still holding A+B on controller one). The background sky on the start screen will now be orange if the code was put in correctly. See Bubbles the monkey:go to computer verse computer mode. Pick two characters (any). When the fight starts, hit start to pause the game. After the match has been paused for five minutes, Bubbles the monkey will dance by. Random Select:hit the X button on the character select screen. Reset to the Sega logo screen:hold A, B, and C, and hit start. I think that covers just about any questions you may have about the Dragonball Z fighting game for the Sega Genesis. Some of the names of the giant fireball attacks may not be exactly correct, as I don't read Japanese all that well. I would like to thank Edward L. Benson of Chicago for asking me how to play this game, as my reply to him turned into this F.A.Q.
