Pojo's Top 10 Anime

By Nathaniel Kader

10. Ergo Proxy
A lot of people don't seem to get into the deeply philisophical anime out there and I think this is a very sad thing. Ergo Proxy is about the classic struggle between the light and dark within oneself and how it affects the people around you. I loved this show because of the hard realistic view of the future of mankind, and the deep character development of Re-l, Vincent/Ergo Proxy, and Pino

9. Steel Angel Kurumi
Its not very often that you find a show that will make you laugh so hard you puke but here you go. The bright happy animation, the fun characters, the love shinanigans, and the bouncy soundtrack all make this a must have for any budding otaku.

8. Kanon (Kyoto animation version or 2006 version as some call it)
Nuclear weapons grade cute and such a heartwarming love story I cried a few times. usually anime love stories are just the usual harem or love triangle shinanigans but everything in this show was beautiful the animation, the soundtrack (which I bought the minute I finished the series), and the deep development of almost every character. My favorite love story in any media format.

7. Higurashi no naku koro ni (The night of the cicada's cry)
If Hitchcock had done an anime it would probably be something like this. A very creative and well executed(no pun intended) murder mystery. Higurashi will have you guessing the whole way through. It may be a little gory so id suggest only 16 or older but other than that a must see for any horror fan. 15 finger joints 15 nails

6. Full Metal Panic! (I'm going to include Fummofu and second raid in this because I consider them a part of the storyline)
where to begin. this show is a mix of love story military action and high school shinanigans (and no I'm not using the word shinanigans too much.) the mixture of genres was what brought me into this show and once I started watching I was hooked. one of the best things out of ADV in the last couple of years

ok now we are getting down to the nitty gritty the stuff I consider set in stone legendary awesomeness the top 5

5. blanket Miyazaki catagory (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Nausica of the Vally of the Wind, Castle in the sky, Kiki's Delivery Service)
what can I say the man is a genius. Princess Mononoke was epic howls moving castle was moving(no pun intended) I got my whole family to watch spirited away more than once which is a miracle for any movie. the man just keeps amazing me with every title he puts out. keep the good stuff coming man!!!

4. R.O.D (Read or die) (I consider the TV series and the OVA one since its a continual storyline)
I love love love the paper sisters. but most of all Anita king shes the no nonsense fighter who can still break down and cry every once and a while. while everyone else has their fancy paper familiers and bows and arrows, she just makes a razor blade and goes for your throat. I was always a bookworm even before I got into anime hardcore and I can definitely relate to this show. its full of action, great storytelling, memorable characters, and lots of heart. no anime fan should be without a copy

3. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)
this show is a mess. a glorious rays of pure joy beaming directly into your skull mess. one episode is a bad home movie, another is a murder mystery, another is a rock concert. I guarantee you will watch it more than once. the characters are just as varied. we have Kyon the ordinary human, Haruhi who is god but doesn't know it, Yuki an alien computer, Mikuru a time traveler, and Izuki an Esper.
together they form the S.O.S dan (which stands for: Saving the world by overloading it with fun Suzumiya brigade) its sole purpose: to solve the mysteries of the universe. It feels like a sin to spoil anymore of this show so I'm going to leave it at that.

2. Azumanga Daioh
Pure unidolterated hilarity.  Azumanga follows 6 girls through 3 years of high school. you will fall in love with every single character (except the perverted male teacher) right from the get go. Chiyo the cuter than kittens with string 10 year old Prodigy,Osaka the space cadet,Tomo the extremely energetic (more like speed addict) idiot, Yomi the slightly overweight (I'M NOT OVERWEIGHT)bookworm, and Sakaki the tall aloof animal lover. this show has a special place in my heart.

and drumroll please .......................................

1. Elfen Lied
I love every single aspect of this show. I have lost count of how many times I have watched it(I stopped counting around 34) the animation is superb when I look at a cherry blossom tree I almost forget it is animated. the soundtrack is haunting. the voice acting is top notch(one of the few shows I can stand to watch in English. amazing job ADV) The characters are real and emotionally damaged. the story is gripping and suspenseful. other people tell me this show is all about the nudity or "fan service" what those people don't get is that if you watch beyond the first 10 minutes of the story you realize that unlike a lot of other anime (or Hollywood movies for that matter) yes it has some nudity and gore in the extreme but it is actually necessary to the story not just added in to draw in men. the story makes us truly sit back and think of how your treatment of other human beings can have serious consequences down the road. and I guarantee that something like this will happen sometime in the future. the question this show poses is when the next stage of humanity comes will we greet it with open arms or lab tests and cover ups? out of the almost 200 anime I own nothing and I mean  comes close to this true masterpiece.

thank you for taking the time to listen to my opinions. hopefully I can help some people discover some new favorites or bring back some memories of old gems.
