Jae Kim: Theory and Practice
Pojo's Pro Player Draft
Match Two: Billy Brake vs. Jarel Winston
July 15, 2010

Follow my reconstruction of this match with analysis-

Game One- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AydziGXexFc

Games Two and Three- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXAsPm9lAX0

A challenger appears!

Jarel Winston- Winston stormed onto the scene at SJC Los Angeles. He had an amazing run through day two, ending at the hands of Jeff Jones in the finals. Ever since that point, Winston has gained incredible confidence and placed solid finishes at premier events.

Styling himself "prowinston," Jarel is one of the funniest players I know in Yu-Gi-Oh! Feel free to view his Youtube channel and laugh while enjoying his in-depth interviews and monologues.

Winston Turn One: Jarel wins the dice roll, huge for the Saber versus Herald matchup. He sees a hand of:

Manju

Dawn of the Herald

Happy Lover

Dark Factory

Book of Moon

Mokey Mokey

This is not the greatest of hands. I'm not sure how comfortable and familiar Jarel is with his Jones Herald build. He does have a play to Manju a Herald and summon it with Dawn, discarding a fairy. This would leave him with two fairies in hand and a Dark Factor along with Book of Moon.

Unfortunately, he opts to summon Manju for Advanced Ritual Art and set Book of Moon.

Billy Turn Two: Billy summons Thunder King, it is Booked when Billy attacks. He plays Sarc, thinks for a bit, and fetches Fulhelmknight. I assume his hand is broken since he doesn't get the usual culprits Faultroll, Cat, or Cold Wave. He sets two backrow and passes.

W3: Jarel needs to get his attack through. He swings into Book of Moon. He then tribute sets for Megami and sets a bluff Dawn. The mistake of not searching Herald on turn one is costing him.

B4: Billy flips TKR and doesn't attack.

W5: Jarel draws and sets Oppression.

B6: Billy draws. He summons Fulhelm and sets a second backrow.

W7: Jarel draws Decree. He sets Happy Lover and Decree. I don't like setting the Fairy here but he probably figures he needs to block damage and Dark Factory can bring them back.

B8: Billy sets a third backrow. This slow game is not really optimal for him and I'm not sure what he's waiting for or why he's not attacking the face-down monsters. Good builds don't run many monsters that have 1900+ defense.

W9: Jarel draws Honest and sets Mokey. He ends with 3 cih.

B10: Billy attacks Mokey with Raioh.

W11: Jarel sets a second Happy Lover.

B12: Billy draws to 5 cih.  He attacks the Megami and takes 100. I don't understand why he's not summoning more monsters and pushing the pace.

W13: Jarel draws a second factory. He passes.

B14: Billy summons Cat. Jarel responds with Oppression and Billy negates it with Trap Stun. Cat gets Darksoul and Airbellum which makes Hyunlei. Hyunlei breaks Decree and the bluff Dawn, leaving Oppression out. Fulhelm attacks Happy Lover, getting Bellum. Raioh attacks the face-down, Jarel scoops.

Winston opens Game Two: Jarel draws six and sees:

FOLLOW GAME TWO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXAsPm9lAX0

Mokey Mokey

Kristya

Sonic Bird

Book of Moon

Manju

Snowman Eater

He Sonic Birds for ARA and sets Book.

B2: Billy summons Thunder King and attacks over Bird. He sets three backrow. I think Jarel's saving of Moon is fine here and standard.

W3: Jarel draws a Snowman and sets one.

B4: Billy summons Fulhelm and attacks. Snowman destroys TKR. Billy uses Divine Wrath on Snowman. This may be a bit premature. I don't really like it but I suppose Billy wants to stop effects from finding Herald. Jarel then wastes his Book on thunder King. 7500 7400 Winston leading.

W5: Jarel draws a Herald. He plays ARA and Brake Solemns it. 7500 3700 Winston leading. He then sets Snowman.

B6: Billy flips TKR, summons Emmersblade with Fulhelm out as well. Fulhelm attacks into Snowman which destroys TKR. He sets a backrow and passes with 1 cih. 7500 3100 Winston.

W7: Jarel topdecks a huge Preparation of Rites which gets ARA back and another Herald. He then gets Herald out, sending 3 Happy Lovers to the graveyard. Herald is summoned in attack position, a dangerous risk without Honest.

Herald attacks into Fulhelm. Jarel negates Fulhelm with Mokey Mokey and it gets hit by Brake's second Divine Wrath! Jarel might have been a bit reckless with his challenge but Billy was very low on cards and hit Solemn, Divine, Divine! Unfortunate for Jarel. Billy pitches Brain for Divine Wrath.

Jarel could have summoned Manju in main phase 2 and tutored a Dawn for Herald. However, he is very upset/shaken by the Divine Wrath and does not.

B8: Billy activates Cold Wave. He syncs for Goyo and takes Snowman Eater.

W9: Jarel has a dead Kristya. He summons Manju but realizes he sided out Dawn. So he searches his last Perfection.

B10: Billy attacks with Goyo. The game is over.
