Top 10 Most Overlooked Cards In Modified
By: Samantha “Rocket” Medeiros
Hello, everyone. Today I’m here with my first article in
a while, the Top
10 Most Overlooked Cards In Modified. I have them listed bellow, with a
rating. (10 being highest; not to be confused with the list number.)
(Ratings
are based on how good the card is when NOT being compared to the ones all
over Modified tournaments.*cough* FERALIGATR *cough*) Here we go!
10. Koga’s Pidgy (Lv.9)
-Why it isn’t used: Low HP, plus no baby power, equals Kentucky Fried
Pidgy,
with a side of Koga. ;)
-Why it should be used: It has extreme potential, especially in Modified,
to
be a great search-and-run card, unlike Cleffa (all though the little
marshmallow has the baby power). Could work wonders in a deck with a few
evolution lines.
-Rating: 6.8
9. Scizor (Promo)
-Why it isn’t used: Typhlosion. Blaine’s Arcanine. Period.
-Why it should be used: With some Metal Energies and some good flips, it’s
a
lean, mean, slashing, clawing, ripping, damage resistant fighting machine.
*pant, pant*
-Rating: 7.2
8. Tyranitar
-Why it isn’t used: With all the anti-Feraligatr decks floating around,
those
decks’ grass Pokémon will rip apart Larvitar and Pupitar before they can
evolve.
-Why it should be used: If you can  get a Tyranitar up, you’ll be
getting
KO’s, most likely, every one to three turns, which is more than I can say
for
Feraligatr. (Once the energies are back in the deck, I’ve noticed that it
can, more often than not, take too many turns to get enough water energy
back
in the discard to do more major damage. This often makes one Feraligatr a
one
hit wonder--two tops.)
-Rating: 7.7
7. Erika’s Dragonair Line
-Why it isn’t used: The Dratini can get killed fast by an evolution, and
the
Dragonair can take so long to power up that it’ll get killed too
quickly.
-Why it should be used: Blizzard can be used to kill off damaged Pokémon on
the opponents bench, or kill annoying benched babies. Also, you can Take
Away
a big evolution (can you say, “Bye-bye, 4 Metal Steelix”?).
-Rating: 7.9
6. Blaine’s Ninetails
-Why it isn’t used: It has a weaker 60 HP, and is overshadowed by
Typhlosion
and Blaine’s Arcanine.
-Why it should be used: 50 damage on turn 2 is just plain good, plus the
power helps it stay alive. The Gym Challenge Vulpix helps it set up,
too.
-Rating: 8.2
5. Brock’s Sandslash Line
-Why it isn’t used: The Sandshrews are too weak, with either bad attacks,
bad
HP, or both. They are often just prize opportunities for the
opponent.
-Why it should be used: Sandslash has a decent 70 HP, and both of it’s
attacks are energy efficient and somewhat reliable. You can get around
resistance if there are no Pewter City Gyms around with Swift, or deal a
respectable 30 for 2 with a chance of poison. Solid.
-Rating: 8.5
4. Feraligatr with Chomp
-Why it isn’t used: People just look at the other Feraligatr, say it’s
better, and leave this one collecting dust.
-Why it should be used: Chomp has great potential. Berserk is a bit risky,
but so is using Blaine’s Arcanine in a Big Fire deck with no Typhlosion.
Also, it has very solid pre-evolutions, making this 'Gatr formidable.
-Rating: 8.7
3. Erika’s Vileplume
-Why it isn’t used: Much like Chomp Feraligatr, people see Erika’s
Victreebel, say it’s better, and toss Vileplume to the wolves.
-Why it should be used: Dealing 60 damage and healing 30 against a
Feraligatr
is just too good. The basics and stage ones are certainly not bad, either.
It
should be played more.
-Rating: 9.0
2. Megainium with Wild Growth
-Why it isn’t used: To be honest, I’m not really sure. There are some out
there, but I believe that it is mostly dormant because of Big Fire running
around, although Erika decks manage... =/
-Why it should be used: 80 damage to 'Gatr, with sleep, for 2 grass. 40
with
sleep against a regular Pokémon, for 2 grass. 10 with sleep against
Steel-types, for 2 grass. Wow.
Rating: 9.3
1. Sabrina’s Kadabra/Alakazam
-Why it isn’t used: Actually, it is used somewhat, but I think fear of
Murkrow may be holding it back...not totally sure, though.
-Why it should be used: Alakazam can use any Psychic Pokémon’s attack on
the
bench. So, you can Mega Burn for 60, then copy something else for the turn
you can’t use Mega Burn. The Kadabra, with Sabrina’s ESP, can almost always
nearly wipe out a Pokémon in one shot...speaking of shots, you can just
finish it off with Psyshot. Nice.
-Rating: 9.6
Well, that’s it! I hope this article of mine gave you some helpful
information, and maybe some different thoughts for your Modified
deck.
Thanks for reading!
