Re: Some of the Cards You Don't Play But Should
Matthew

March 14, 2003

Goodness. This is a pretty good little article... but some of these "overlooked" cards are "overrated", which considering some of them is pretty hard to do (How do you call Venomoth anything but dog poop?!). So... I guess I'll send in a semi-rebuttal to this article, and hopefully you'll like it enough to post.

Bill... Charizard (!)... Venusaur...

??! Bill is tremendously OVERRATED... come on. Two for one was phenominal way back when... but then again, so was a Sega Saturn. Times have changed, and Bill simply isn't efficient enough. He deserves his spot in the middle class.

Charizard deserves a place in the middle, not as dog poop, nor as ultra-brokenness. It's just somewhere in the middle. As for Venusaur, people realized that Fire would demolish it. And that remains true.

Pinsir?! Electrode?? Venomoth?

Pinsir remains not-good-enough... 60 HP, remember! Electrode... just LOOK at that thing! I can't anymore, it makes me physically ill. And what's this about nobody playing Lightning? You remind me of Thundachu, you're so out of touch with the Unlimited metagame. As for Venemoth, it does what, 20 damage if the weaknessess are matched up correctly? Good heavens.

Gengar is just not good enough! 10 damage with Curse really is irrelevant, especially with Pichu and Muk. Lapras WAS played, until Lightning started dominating. (See Electrode). And Zapdos is too EXPENSIVE!!

Dark Dragonair is terrible! Why use an evolution to get an evolution, instead of just your primary evolution? Dark Blastoise IS played in MF, last time I checked. (Rand0m will have to kill you for that ;P) And Dark Charizard... Unfortunately, it has the absolute worst stage 1 ever (Base Haunter looks like Wigglytuff when compared to Dark Charmeleon), and it's just plain not that good.

Rocket's Moltres was sorta nice, but the HP, again. And Erika's Vileplume was a Stage 2, and not an exceptionally good one, at that. Erika's Jiggly was HEAVILY played at nearly ALL levels of tournament play, and still is. A comment like "SOME people played him" (emphasis added) makes you wonder, seriously.

And R's Mewtwo is as terrible as your mother's spaghetti after being boild for a couple hours too long. PP for 20 isn't good anough, and the big ER shows itself again. Baine's Zard was a fun little card, but not really that good. Misty's Gyarados was one of very few truly underrated cards, along with B's Sevenandahalftails and B's Protection.

Meganium was heavily expirimented with, but ultimately rejected. That's about as non-overlooked as you can get. Seriously. Bellosom is difficult to break, and stuff like Chansey just OHKO's the first one you get out. Miltank is bad, bad to the bone. Except in draft. I would draft it above most other stuff.

Umbreon is too expensive, IMO, but many people agree with you (Bondi, for one). Wobbufett is absolutely terrible in just about every single way imaginable. I had a friend who played with him once. He ditched it after one tourney, calling it "the worst card ever". And I played T-tar, and, he bites.

Suicune and Raikou are about as different as it gets. One is fairly strong, one is disgustingly terrible. The strong one's name starts with an "S" (and ends with a "uicune".) And Missy is weak in Unlimited, and on the whole, overrated in MF.

Dark Gengar is terrible in Unlimited, and like Missy, overrated in MF. Dark Scizor is impossible to build up in Unlimited, and too slow for MF. Dark Espy is terrible. And more terrible.

As for wrath and all the others, they're mediocre at best. Saying that we should think about using cards on the level of Jungle Electrode is ridiculous.
