The Pokémon TCG- a world dominated by popular decks
that most novices don't stand a chance against. True
in many ways, but It is pretty easy to come up with a
great deck with a limited card pool or  not many rare
cards.
Here are some easy steps that can help you in your
pokémon journey-

1. Build a Deck
Seems a bit odd being first, but oh well.
Start by Inventing a strategy for your deck.
then build a deck with some reasonable amounts of
energy (about 12 for each colour in a two colour deck,
or around 20 in a monocolour deck)a respectable amount
of GOOD trainers that fit your strategy (e.g. for
energy denial, lots of ERs and/or SERs are required
for the deck)
and some strong basic pokémon, basic pokémon, & an
evolution line or two. (last two  are optional)

2. Go to a tourney
This really involves playing a few rounds, looking at
other games, and getting a feel of what you will be
playing against. Then modify your deck or trash it
completely in order to deal with problems. E.G. If
hitmonchans are played frequently, then use scythers
or movie mewtwos to deal with them. By the way, if you
need alakazams but only have say, one, than use
slowbros instead. this is just one of the examples of
Pov's pokémon.

3. Play.
Go to a tourney or whatever. Play some games, and see
how you do, then modify your deck according to how
well you did. If you are STUCK on what to do, try
getting help with the deck through your friends or
deck mechanics.

4. Have fun!
This is really the best thing about the TCG. NOT
winning or winning, and feeling good about how well
you just did. keep on modifying your deck/s, and you
are on your way to becoming a pokémon master!
