Blue is easily one of the worst colors at the moment, but even still it has some of the greatest potential to, in the hands of a skilled deck builder, dish out some serious migraines and get a lot of people hating your guts. Just playing an island is enough to seriously dent someone’s self esteem, they get the idea that they must kill you quickly, and are more likely to make reckless mistakes. Either way, I decided to play test a Wizards deck that I made on Magic Online, and as it worked pretty well, I have decided to share it to all the true blue fanatics in the world (Note that this deck was built on a budget, there’s I believe 1 rare?)

Blue’s main strength is the fact that so many of its creatures have morph abilities and pseudomorph abilities. There are several cards that flip for useful effects, such as Echo Tracer and Willbender, both are useful for keeping your monsters alive. A good trick is to block there monster with the Tracer, deal damage and then un-morph to save your monster. Another useful wizard that many of the creatures work well with is Crafty Pathmage. Use the ability on a morphed Raven Guild Master or Riptide Entrancer and then unmorph to take advantage of extra damage and the ability, or use it on a morphed Nameless One and then un-morph for a ton of free damage. Aphetto Alchemist is mainly for keeping Nameless One or Wall of Wonder ready to block. Speaking of which, Wall of Wonder is an excellent answer to a first turn Rootwalla or Goblin Lackey or whatever. It’s a chump blocker that has great synergy with… Aphetto Runecaster, of course. This deck has so many morphs you can get massive card advantage with one of these out, and if you have a Wall of wonder out… You get the idea. Finally, the last wizard in the deck is Scornful Egotist. Now is when many of you will think I’m crazy and go to a saner article, but this has great synergy with some cards that will be mentioned later.

The spells are mostly counterspells, like mana leak and Ixidor’s Will, which can actually be pretty decent in this deck. There is also Frozen Solid, as that is about the only permanent solution to creatures this deck has other then counters. If you wish, you can replace this with Pemmin’s Aura, which works well with Wall of Wonder. Finally, there is Rush of Knowledge and Dispersal Shield. First, most of the creatures in this deck are high costed, and these cards work well with both of them, however, these cards work best with Scornful Egotist, as it costs 7U, but can be played for 3U by morphing and un-morphing. Scornful Egotist becomes and 8 card draw. Get your teeth around that one. As for lands, there are 17 Islands, 4 Lonely Sandbars (for speed) and 2 Riptide Laboratories (to re-use morphs or save your creatures).

This deck is pretty good. It has worked well against most decks that I have played it against, even a few Wake decks. Either way, try it out, and if you like it, I’m happy to have helped you. If you think I’m nuts, e-mail me at walsharch@comcast.net. Put Dr. Nick in the subject line. Peace out.
