4:12 PM To: mtg_help@pojo.com Subject: Red-Blue Day Of The Dragons Deck (Extended, I think?) First of all, yes I did make a red-blue deck. Laugh all you want, but I playtested it in four games, and it only lost once, and that was entirely due to getting mana screwed (meaning, not an inherent fault of this particular deck). I got the idea for this deck from an article fairly recently posted on MagicTheGathering.com, where a person had proposed the idea of using Elves and to a lesser extent, Insect tokens as the basis for the transformation. Now, using Elves and their inherent mana acceleration would be a pretty good idea, but the idea of using Elves and Insects together in the same deck seemed a bit inefficient to me. And then I realized, why not just take their idea and "modify" it? =) For those of you who frequently read these posted deck ideas, I posted way back about a combo idea that I ahd come up with for goblin tokens. For those not familiar with the combo, here's what I had originally posted. Basically, the combo involved 3 cards: Brightstone Ritual, Goblin Offensive, and Mana Echoes. Here's what the three cards do: Brightstone Ritual (One red mana): Add (one red mana) to your mana pool for each Goblin in play. Goblin Offensive (One red mana, two colorless mana, and X): Put X Goblin tokens into play. Treat these tokens as 1/1 red creatures. Mana Echoes (2 red mana, 2 colorless): Whenever a creature comes into play, you may add (one colorless mana) to your mana pool for each creature in play that shares a creature type with it. So.....the combo should be pretty self-explanatory. Get out 3-4 Goblins, play a Brightstone Ritual for a bunch more mana, then play Goblin Offensive for basically that many more Goblin tokens. And although in that original deck, I had been using Mana Echoes, in the current deck, I elected to not use them partly for the sake of keeping the combo simpler to use, and also partly for the sake of giving myself access to more blue cards. So, for now, Mana Echoes will be a possible sideboard card. Really, the most important card in this deck is going to be Opposition. Using this card in a deck that puts out rather large numbers of Goblin tokens means that once you get it out, your opponent will very quickly feel the noose tightening around their neck. For those of you who aren't familiar with Opposition, it goes like this: Opposition (2 blue, 2 colorless mana): Tap an untapped creature you control: Tap target artifact, creature or land. It's a diabolical card in any blue control deck. Even more so in a token deck. =) Basically, your main goal, after getting out a few Goblin tokens, is to get this card out as quickly as you can. Hence, the Sage Owls. It's a 1/1 flyer for a blue and a colorless that, when it comes into play, lets you peek at the top four cards of your library and put them back in any order . Not bad for two mana, eh? And speaking of Goblin tokens, you'll need a fair number of them in the deck to ensure that you can get them out quickly. I have included a full dozen Goblins in my deck, mostly because I happened to have a lot of them anyways (I play a red-burn deck with Goblin Grenades, so there you go). And, of course, since this is a Day Of The Dragons deck, you'll obviously need 4 of those. I was lucky enough to get 3 of my 4 out of buying booster packs. All I can say is, buy individuals, trade, buy booster packs, whatever it takes. And in case you were wondering, yes, seven mana is a lot to pay, but since you're stalling the bejeezsus out of your opponent with Opposition and like 10-12 Goblin tokens to work with, it wont be too hard to stall until the seven-mana mark. Or, alternately, you could use a Brightstone Ritual to help pay the seven. Or, even more alternately, you could just swamp your opponent with tons of little 1/1 pingers; there's lots of ways to kill your opponent with this deck. Oh, and I also put in 4 Counterspells, just to help screw with the opponent. But isn't that what blue is all about? And if you really want to (like I did), you can use Fervor to give all your creatures haste. It pays off when you finally do the DotD trick and suddenly you just attack right away with an army of 5/5 flying haste dragons. Not much they can do about that. ;) But enough talk, heres the deck list: 4 Day Of The Dragons (Scourge rare, about 5-6 bucks each) 4 Brightstone Ritual (Onslaught common) 4 Goblin Offensive (Anthologies/Urza's Saga uncommon) 4 Opposition (reprinted several times, rare) 4 Sage Owls (7th Ed. common!) 4 Counterspells 3 Fervor (6th Ed, 7th Ed rare, maybe 2-3 bucks) 4 Mons Goblin Raiders (reprinted pretty often, common) 4 Goblin Grapplers (Legions common) 4 Raging Goblins (reprinted pretty often, common) 10 Mountain 8 Island Hope this deck works well for you, cause I know it has worked very well for me so far. The only cards in this deck that I had trouble getting were the DotD (natch), and the Opposition. Let me know if this deck wins you any matches. =) David Lebedoff BuckarooBanzai37@aol.com
