The Return of an Arch-type A long time ago in a card shop not so far away, a deck was being played that people thought was a joke. With decks like Sligh, Slivers, and Skies people looked over the power of a deck that was seeing some degree of play. The 16 land Stompy. Now I know this deck was probably played mostly with the Masques block, if it actually did see any Type-2 play. Though not popular it could be fairly powerful if played correctly. But with the new Odyssey Block, a legend will return. And possibly it can see some tournament play, maybe even a Grand Prix or possibly Pro-Tour. I originally built this deck as a theoretical idea, and tested it on Apprentice. I actually only built it to test my Control and Slivers Decks against. But after gaining some advice from the folks at the mtgnews.com boards, I modified the deck into it's new more powerful self. This is the new 16 Land Stompy. 16 Land Stompy version 2.0 Lands- 16 16x Forest Creatures- 24 4x Birds of Paradise 4x Llanowar Elves 4x Diligent Farmhand 4x Kavu Titan 4x Wild Mongrel 4x Nimble Mongoose Other- 20 4x Harrow 4x Muscle Burst 4x Call of the Herd 4x Beast Attack 4x Overrun Now for the deck explanation. Lands- Simple enough, there's sixteen forests. Creatures- Now in order to make this effective you need mana acceleration. In this deck you have Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, and Diligent Farmhand. Farmhand actually serves a duel purpose. With it, you can gain the needed limited mana you have, but also you can increase the effectiveness of Muscle Burst. You also have three main offensive creatures Kavu Titan, Wild Mongrel, and Nimble Mongoose. There are two spells that conjure more creatures, but I'll explain that later. All of these creatures are already extremely quick and mana effective. Multiply that by the mana acceleration and your talking ideally getting a kickered Titan by at least turn three. Nimble Mongoose is only used for a quick assault. Threshold helps, but it's not too important. And Wild Mongrel to simply put it, is a staple for all Green decks. Spells- In order for this deck to work you need a card to increase the amount of forests in play quickly. Harrow is the best choice; granted you have to sacrifice a land but getting two more makes it worth it. Since this is a Stompy you need to increase the power of your creatures, Muscle Burst and Overrun fit the bill. Muscle Burst is cheap and if you keep using it gains more power every time. Overrun allows for an increase of all of your creatures, plus trample. This equates to a final assault on your opponent and thus a win. But what's a Stompy without large creatures? Though this deck has Kavu Titan, it only gets better with the kicker cost. Beast Attack and Call of the Herd can gain those larger creatures for you, with a bonus of one of those cards being an Instant. This deck is and will be extremely quick if you use it correctly. Ideally you want to play a forest and Birds or Elves on turn one. But even if you don't you have them in your hand, you still have enough leeway in time to wait. Your main threat with this whole strategy is a single card Washout. But Washout is a little bit more expensive then other control cards. So you will want to get all of your creatures out as quickly as possible before your opponent can cast it. But it still will remain as a threat. Even if this deck won't see much tournament play it still is fun. With the multicolored environment, mono-colored decks most likely won't be seen too much. With the only exceptions being the occasional Skies and Control. But try it out, it actually is fun to play, and win with. Jeremy Mombourquette mako_raptor101@hotmail.com
