Apocalypse White/Black
by Phil Shoemaker

Greetings!

The full Apocalypse spoiler has been revealed to us, and the set is
receiving a good bit of hype for its opposing color theme. Apocalypse
introduces enemy-color painlands just like the Ice Age painlands. No, they
don't even come into play tapped like the Tempest pain lands, which saw
little play. The new expansion also reintroduces enemy-color gold cards, as
well as giving us enemy split cards. Here are some of my favorite cards from
the set:

Vindicate
Rare
Sorcery
1WB
Destroy target permanent.
"Don't mourn for me. This is my destiny." -Gerrard

Desert twister for three? NICE. This is bound to see play. Epecially now
that we have a black/white painland:

Caves of Koilos
Rare
Land
T: Add one colorless mana to your mana pool. ; T: Add W or B to your mana
pool. Caves of Koilos deals 1 damage to you.

Since we're on the subject of black/white, check these out:

Death Grasp
Rare
Sorcery
XWB
Death Grasp deals X damage to target creature or player. You gain X life.
Yawgmoth's greatest joy came from watching one hero defeat another.

It's a Drain Life, but better, since you gain the life even if the creature
is removed in response. On top of that, you can gain more than the toughness
of the creature, and pay the X with colorless mana.

Gerrard's Verdict
Uncommon
Sorcery
WB
Target player discards two cards from his or her hand. You gain 3 life for
each land card discarded this way.
A heart of light and a soul of darkness cannot coexist.

People have compared this to Hymn to Tourach. It's not that good, but if
they just toss a couple lands, six life for you. I like it.

Night / Day
Uncommon
Instant (Split)
B / 2W
Night = Target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn. ; Day = Creatures
target player controls gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

I definetly like the black/white split for limited, but not for constructed.
Apocalypse should shake up limited quite a bit, since drafters will likely
pick friendly colors in the Invasion and Plainshift packs. Will the cards in
Apocalypse be worth splashing a third color for? We shall see.

The last black/white card is not a gold card, but a card featuring a theme i
haven't mentioned yet- enemy-colored kickers. The card:

Desolation Angel
Rare
Creature - Angel
3BB
5/4
Kicker WW ; Flying ; When Desolation Angel comes into play, destroy all
lands you control. If you paid the kicker cost, destroy all lands instead.

Armageddon on a creature! The only problem is the hefty price of seven mana.
A game winner if it resolves, but how can you hit seven mana in time against
a fast deck, or keep it from getting countered against a control deck? I
hope somebody figures that out, but I just don't see it happening.

Next time I'll talk about red/blue. Until then, keep playing and HAVE FUN!
