BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Ron's First Deck
June 11, 2007

This next one took me a minute to realize that it isn't actually a deck; it's a list of cards that Ron here has at his disposal.  Today's job is sort of like a Sealed Deck tournament, except that you'll never in your life crack a Sealed cardpool this sweet.
Hello Mr. Moor

HELP! I can’t seem to make up my mind on a deck im building.  I believe I have a few more cards to go but can’t seem to place em together.

I am interested in a Black, White w/ splash of red or just doing one color with a splash of either White or red or whatever you think is best.  My colors seem to to have good cards. I need a direction and thank you for the help.   Here are the cards

So what kind of deck can we build out of this?  Well, you've definitely got some good stuff here.  I'd say you could actually build a white deck and a black deck; your cardpool is so full of playables.  As for your red, well, Lightning Axe and Volcanic Hammer are good, but I'm not sure how to work them into a deck.  Without knowing what else you have in Red, we'll stick with Black and White.  There's plenty to work with there.

Starting with black, it looks like you've got the
makings of a decent control deck.  Korlash, Tombstalker, and Avatar of Woe can be your big finishers. Last Gasp and Damnation especially can keep your opponent's threats off the table.  Hypnotic and Shimian Specters make decent early beaters and excellent ways to rip apart your opponent's hand, so he can't recover after the Damnation.  You could use Bitter Ordeal after a Damnation or a bloody combat phase to try and minimize the chance of your opponent topdecking a bomb, and Nihilith would work great if you're killing opponent's creatures already.  Temporal Extortion could be good in there too, if you just need one extra swing with the Tombstalker.

Should Demon's Horn go in that deck?  Why bother?  It doesn't do enough to make it worth the slot in your decklist.  Lotus Bloom is too slow here, and Stuffy Doll, while not really anything more than a good blocker and 1 damage a turn, might go in simply as a creature that survives Damnation.  But that's only if all the other cards I suggested don't make up a full deck ( I didn't count), and keep in mind you'll likely need 24 Swamps.

Now for your white deck.  What with all your Angels, Magus of the Disk, and Wrath of God, this one will be the same strategy as the black one.  You'll want to use Porphyry Nodes, Pacifism, and Faith's Fetters to neutralize your opponent's threats until you can drop a Serra Avenger, Serra Angel, or Akroma.  If the board starts looking unfavorable, then sacrifice the Magus or unleash the Wrath.  Crovax, Ascendant Hero gets special attention here as a creature who can jump back into your hand to dodge global removal, allowing you to wipe the board and then replay a 4/4.  Global removal immediately followed up by a decent-sized threat usually wins.  And again, if you need to fill a few more slots, you could do worse than to throw a few Stuffy Doll in there.

This should get you where you need to be, Ron.  Not one, but two decks you can build out of the cards you've already got.  And I've got to say, I'm surprised you have so many chase rares.  But remember, it's not how many rares you can afford, it's what you do with them.

Good luck!

~BMoor
