BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Green, Black and Red type 2 deck.

Sept 8, 2006

Once again, the age old problem of too many singleton cards rears its ugly head.  Everybody has that deck they want to add several different cards to, but something has to give.  And once again, I am called on to make the cut.  Let's get to work!
Hello Bmoor,  I am trying to make a red, black and green type 2 deck for my local tourney scene I haven't really had much of a chance to play it against other decks since I still think it needs work and its about 71 cards and I just don't know what to thin out I need help. Budget isn't really a problem since I can get a hold of the cards but I want to keep it type 2 though. thanks in advance

I have noticed that the few times I've played it with friends that it goes really slow it takes a while for me to get enough mana out to do anything but once it gets started things just keep on going.  Any changes you feel it needs would be greatly appreciated since this is the first time I've really made a type 2 deck.
Okay, the first thing that needs to happen is that we need to pull at least 11 cards that aren't good enough.  That should actually be easy, since I see quite a few cards that aren't really good enough for tournament play (and I assume you want to play in tournaments since you're asking for Type 2).

OUT:
2 Gruul Nodorog
1 Balduvian Warlord
1 Steam Spitter
1 Borborygmos
1 Herald of Leshrac
1 Sisters of Stone Death
2 Surging Might
1 Bloodbond March
1 Braid of Fire
2 Balduvian Rage
1 Magmatic Core
4 Rite of Flame
2 Seismic Spike
2 Ohran Yeti

None of those creatures are good enough, I'm afraid, to be competitive in a tournament environment.  And your spells just don't show any synergy with one another.  So that's 22 cards out, giving you room for 11 more.  To start, your 2 Skred in the sideboard should come into the maindeck.  Next, increase your counts of Putrefy and Wrecking Ball to 4 each.  That gives you room for 4 more cards.  Two of them should be Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper, as his ability has great interaction with Shambling Shell and Wild Cantor.  The other two, I think, should be something that can properly abuse snow mana.  Chilling Shade and Rimescale Dragon come to mind.  Boreal Centaur could also work.  Stalking Yeti would probably be best though.

And as for your lands, since you have Skred, Putrefy, Wrecking Ball, and Surging Flame, I don't think you'll need Mouth of Ronom.  That can become Scrying Sheets, allowing you to accelerate your mana and draw into any other snow cards you have.

One last note: in tournaments, sideboards are optional, but they must be exactly 15 cards.  A 12-card sideboard is illegal.  I'm not an expert on sideboards, so I won't get into that, but your original sideboard picks looked okay.

That's just about all that's needed from me here, so I'll wish you luck and let you get to work.  Until next time!
