BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Prince & Pauper Tourney Deck-- B/W Pauper

Sept 13, 2006

Today's article is a bit of a divergence from what I'm used to.  Normally, I am mindful of my client's budget in that I try not to recommend expensive rares, under the assumption that uncommons and commons are fairly easy to come by.  But this deck has very specific needs, as you will see.
Dear Deck Garage:

I've a deck that I'm considering entering in a Prince & Pauper tournament at the end of September.  For your readers who are not familiar with the format - To enter one needs to have 2 decks to compete.  The Prince deck is made up of only uncommon and rare cards with the exception of land cards which can be basic lands.  The second deck is a deck made up of entirely common cards.  Once the pairings are decided both players roll a single die.  Odds = Prince Even = Pauper.  So basically I need a common deck that will have some game in the event it is drawn against a Prince Deck.  The odds may not be great, but I'm hoping you have some suggestions or alternative ways to go with the deck.  The deck consists of black and white common cards that lulls my opponent into thinking I am playing a straight discard deck that evolves into a removal deck as they quickly attempt to play out their hand.

Greg
Well, Greg, I'd be happy to help you with this project.  As a budget deckbuilder, I'm constantly looking for commons that can stand on equal ground with rares successfully.  A common deck that can deal with a rare/uncommon deck seems like a noble undertaking.

Now, I've found that to get the most economy out of cards, your best bet is multicolor cards.  Being two colors acts as a drawback, so that the card can be more powerful for its cost.  So what B/W multicolor commons are there worth considering?

Blind Hunter
Castigate
Pillory of the Sleepless
Putrid Warrior
Soul Link

That isn't much, I'm afraid.  You've already got 4 Castigate, and 2 Pillory of the Sleepless.  But that lone Arrest should be a third Pillory.  A few Putrid Warrior would probably help, like by replacing Starlight Invoker and maybe a Twisted Abomination, but don't replace all the Abominations since they're your biggest creature.

Aside from that, there isn't all that much to do here.  It would probably help if you could give your Abominations trample or some other evasion ability, like with Dragon Shadow, or by replacing Vulshok Morningstar with Neurok Hoversail or Whispersilk Cloak.  And Dimir House Guard would make a good addition as well, as a 2/3 fear, a tutor for Faceless Butcher, or a way to sacrifice the Butcher with the "remove from game" ability on the stack, causing the "return to play" ability to resolve first and end up removing the creature forever.  I'm almost positive that still works.  But I don't know what to pull for it.  I'll leave it as a consideration for you.  Best of luck, Greg, and have an uncommonly good time at the tournament!
