BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
W/U Soldier deck

July 7, 2006

When people build Soldier decks, they usually make them White.  All of the cards that make Soldiers a tribe are White, so why not?  But other colors can easily be added.  Red and Black are common adds, but what about Blue?  Blue is certainly not known for the aggressive strike force a Soldier deck relies on.  Can it work?
Hi, this is my favorite deck, it is a Soldier deck. I made it almost by myself and it works greatly. I usually trick people by telling them that's its a white weenie deck, but it isn't. Its pretty fast and I can pump up my weak 1/1 tokens into 5/5 flying soldiers easily, and with Mobilization and Kjeldoran Outpost I can have a huge token army from which I can sacrifice creatures to use some enchantments (Martyr's Cause, Fanatical Devotion). I also like to use the soldier abilities (Shadow, Unbloackable) because most of the time they work towards any deck.

I asked to my friends what do they think from my deck and they told that's its a really good one, but they usually beat me easily with their control and artifact decks. So, I thought that maybe you cloud help me with that.

Thanks :)

This deck's main weak spot, like so many others, is that it has too many "one-ofs".  What it needs more than anything else is to decide which cards it really needs to see every game, and which are merely taking up space that could be put to better use.  I'll tell you right now, on the creature end of things Daru Warchief, Thalakos Scout, Catapult Master, Commander Eesha, and Metathran Soldier are solid gold in a deck of this nature.  Next on the list are probably any creature with flying or shadow and good stats for their mana cost.  Decidedly less so are Deftblade Elite and Metathran Elite to name a few.  The purpose of your deck is to have lots of hard-to-block creatures.  Deftblade Elite's purpose is to prevent a creature from blocking your more meaningful creatures.  This will not be an issue.  And Metathran Elite is only unblockable while it's enchanted, which is an unlikely scenario.  Definitely go to four copies of every card listed as "gold" (except Eesha, Legends have their own considerations) and drop as many of the other creatures as necessary to make room.

As for your noncreature spells, if you're half as good at making Soldier tokens as you claim to be, then Unified Strike is a must-have-four-of card.  Martyr's Cause and Fanatical Devotion, as useful as they are with token producers, just aren't that useful.  Yes, you can make new tokens to replace what you sacrifice, but for what?  To prevent damage and regenerate creatures?  You're better off just keeping the creatures in play.  Then you'll have more creatures.  And with more creatures, you'll want more Glorious Anthems to maximize their potential.

That pretty much covers it.  Remember, if your deck is based around a creature type, then about half the creatures in that deck should have a creature-type based ability (like Daru Warchief and Catapult Master).  that should give our deck enough synergy to overwhelm the opponent.  Good luck!
