BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Ravnica Block R/W/U deck

July 24, 2006

One of the most difficult things about playing Magic can be acquiring the cards you need or want.  The Pojo Message Boards have a whole section devoted to trading, where you can post what you have and what you need, but sometimes nobody wants to trade.  Buying cards can get expensive, and selling old unwanted cards (for money to buy more) is tricky business.  This is why I draft; you can play in tournaments without worrying about putting the deck and sideboard together beforehand.  But this problem need not stymie the enterprising player.  Cards can often be acquired cheaply among casual playgroups, and learning to make do with what one has can help you learn to play your way out of tight situations.
Hi BMoor I am Jason and I am pretty new to Magic been playing for about 3 months now and I build myself a Artifact deck that leans towards the affinity for Artifacts theme and I need some help to sort out my deck it’s a bit of a mess atm so if you can give any advice on it would be appreciated. Oh and I don’t really have a budged I mostly get my cards from trading my friends. I have a few cards cause one friend that stop playing magic gave all his cards to me so that’s basically the only way I get my cards. And it does not help that I stay in South Africa so getting a single card becomes hard thanks.  The list Follows:

Creatures: 23

4x Myr Servitor
4x Myr Retriever
4x Disciple of the Vault
3x Qumulox
2x Frogmite
2x Myr Enforcer
2x Spikeshot Goblin (Used with Cranial Plating)
1x Mycosynth Golem
1x Arcbound Stinger

Artifacts: 19

4x Cranial Plating
4x Terrarion
3x Energy Chamber
2x Darksteel Pendant
1x Lotus Petal
1x Paradise Mantal
1x Skullclamp (use on Myr Servitor or Retriever for Emergency Card Drawing)
1x Urza`s Incubator (was used to create an infinite loop with Grinding Station and Blasting Station with Myr Retriever)
1x Manariki-Gusari
1x Scrabbling Claws

Sorcery’s: 1

1x Fabricate (On the lookout for more)

Artifact Lands: 18

4x Seat of the Synod
4x Vault of Whispers
4x Great Furnace
3x Tree of Tales
3x Ancient Den

PS: the reason I removed the infinite loop is we decided to ban that in our games
I'll be happy to assist, Jason.  I'm also happy to add "South Africa" to the list of places from which I've received E-mail from Magic players asking for my help.  The list is getting pretty long...
Now, let's start by seeing what we'd be better off without.  You say Urza's Incubator was part of an infinite loop with Grinding and Blasting Station, but you took out the loop.  So what does the Incubator do for you now?  Not much of anything, it seems.  So that can come out.  Next on the chopping block (or should I say, the scrap heap) is Terrarion-- there's better ways to fix your mana than this.  And some of them are artifacts as well, so Terrarion is just a useless bauble.  You could replace them with Fellwar Stone, or Darksteel Ingot, or even Chromatic Sphere.  That, plus your Paradise Mantle and Lotus Petal should give you all the mana fixing you need.  It's not like artifacts are picky about what color of mana you cast them for, and your various affinity spells will be barely any mana at all anyway.  The last card you can do without is Arcbound Stinger-- quite a few of your creatures aren't in fact artifacts, so this is essentially just a 1/1 flier for 2.  You'd do better with a 0/2 flier for 0, namely Ornithopter.  Or you could use the extra slot for those Fabricates you're working on getting.

Let me just suggest a few more cards that may help you.  I understand that you may have trouble getting them, but remember:they're all optional.  If you happen across a copy or two of any of these cards, throw them in and see how you like them.  But don't break your back getting them.  As I said earlier, the pojo Message Boards could help you out.

Darksteel Citadel-- As of now, all your lands are susceptible to Shatter-type effects.  Having a few indestructible lands would protect you against Shatterstorm, as well as Armageddon or similar effects.
Ritual of Restoration-- For one mana, get back any artifact from the graveyard.  If this hadn't been in the same block as Eternal Witness, it would've been notorious throughout the Magic community.  And you've already got Ancient Den with no use for white mana, so why not?

Bringer of the White Dawn-- More mana than the Ritual, but it can bring artifacts right into play.  It can also attack for 5, which is always good.

Arcum Daggson-- This will probably be the hardest card to obtain, so I mention it only as a footnote.  But it's ability, if used on your own artifact creatures (in response to lethal combat damage for example) would let you search your library for any noncreature artifact and put it directly into play.  I don't have to tell you how useful that could be.

Really, those extra Fabricates are probably all you need (you were a card over 60 to begin with, but it shouldn't matter too much).  I just enjoy throwing out ideas, in case you happen to have some of those cards in that big pile your friend gave you.  Never be afraid to try new cards or new ideas.  Good luck!
