BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Alex's GB deck
2.21.06

Most of the decks I've been working on up to this point have been casual decks for playing with friends at the kitchen table and whatnot, but I can do more than that.  Here's a guy who's looking for some last-minute spit-n-ploish for a deck that's on its way to Mega-Con, then Regionals!
This is my last magic deck, so anything and everything is on the line with this one. I plan to take it to Mega-Con coming up and from there train for regionals. Inbetween I am going to FNM.So to brass tax.The deck I feel is in it's late stages, much of the base is complete and the main idea is firm. Acting as mana accleraters there are Birds and Elders. Utility cards would be the dual lands, the legendary lands and Svogthos. Card advantage is the Top. Board clear is the Boilers. Win conditions are the Koks, Inky, Kodama, and Scarabs. Point kill is Mortify, Putrefy, and Last Gasp. Finally as an element of recursion there is Recollect. All the bases for deck building are covered. As for sideboard, 4 Cranials, 3 Nightmare Void, 3 Erradicates, 1 Mortify, and 4 Hideous Laughter. Cranials is proactive combo killer, Nightmare Void is disruption, Erradicates is reactive killer, Mortify is heavy enchantment coverage, and Hideous runs crowd control. So here is the conflict, does the rubric really have to be present in a tier one deck? Does the deck need to focus it's strength in another area to run more successfully? Are there holes in the sideboard?

Llanowar Wastes x4

A friend of mine uses a similar deck, the only variations in his deck is that he runs 4 Mortify, no Gasps, no boiler, 2 Temple Gardens, Wood Elves, Llanowar Elves and fewer win conditions. So any ideas?

Thank you very much,
Alex
Okay Alex, let's see what I can do.  This appears to be a standard "The Rock" deck, with a white splash for Mortify.  That white splash is really the only thing I saw that stuck out at me.  It's a great card, but including a single Plains just for 3 Mortify seems awkward to me when you've got answers in your own colors.  My advice: replace Mortify with either Naturalize or Sundering Vitae.  Yes, these don't take care of creatures, but you've already got Putrefy, Last Gasp, Plague Boiler, and all the sideboard removal.  Naturalize and Sundering Vitae also give you some more options against artifacts-- you'd be surprised how dependant some people are on their Signets, and last time I checked Umezawa's Jitte was still around.  Plus, if you're willing to pay 1WB in a G/B deck for Mortify, 1G and 2G with Convoke will put much less stress on your mana base.  With the slot you free up by taking out the Plains, you could add another support card or win condition.  Personally, I like Golgari Guildmage in this, or Gleancrawler to bring back Sakura-Tribe Elders, but another Top would also be nice.

Aside from that, I think this deck is already pretty streamlined.  There isn't much more I can do for it.  Your best bet is to take it to as many FNM tournaments as you can and practice, practice, practice.  Good luck at Mega-Con!

Anyone else who would like my help with their deck can reach me at bemore4096@yahoo.com.  Thank you, BMoor
