My name’s Matthew!

Well well well… the last time I played in the Hastings end-of-Season tournament, I used Lawnmower and got first place (the deck report is at http://www.pojo.com/KillerDecks/February2002/226/Lawnmower%20-%20Grass%20-%20MatthewYeager.htm)… would I have a repeat? My friend Brolin (whom I consider to be my biggest competitor) and I both agreed beforehand to both use RK9 and no more then 2 Super Energy Removals or Energy Removals in our decks (and no water splashes). Therefore, I made this deck:

RK9 0wnz U!

Pokémon

1 Elekid (Anti-water and great for when I can’t attack… GREAT card)

1 Pichu* (uhh… Promo! Ya, that’s it! That "Let’s Play" attack really, really helped me in Game 4, giving me 3 prizes and helping with a 4th)

1 Magby (Anti-power… didn’t really help in the tournament but he’s still cool)

1 Cleffa (Best card in the game. 1 is enough, though… 4 babies is already pushing it with my low basics count… and it never ended up in my prizes, which is good. I dare not offend Cleffa by suggesting it’s Promo)

1 Scyther* (Fury Cutter! It saved me in game 1)

3 Magmar (Okay, if I say Base people might actually think… nah… you aren’t THAT stupid, are you? {Fossil, duh.})

4 Growlithe* (Neo: Destiny! I mean, why would you go for extra HP? HP is overrated, I think.)

3 RK9* (Light, of course. I mean, giving your opponent a free Switch is just WONDERFUL! What’s Base got, anyways? Take down? Even with a Metal you still do 10 to yourself! You need to conserve HP!)

15

Trainers

1 Nightly (Oddly, I never used it in the tournament, though I used it extensively in playtesting…)

2 Pluspower (0wnz U!)

2 Oak (Yay! As I explained in my other Killer Deck Report, this is a really slow area… any more Oaks and I’d deck out, any fewer and I’d be just like them!)

1 Elm (GREAT card. Not as good for recovery as Oak, but I used it extensively. If I have both an Oak and an Elm in my hand, I’d Elm, every time.)

2 Lass (Lass 0wnz U! Great card… I love it.)

2 Bill (Simple, yet good. I love that quote of Rand0m’s, "Draw 2 cards. Nothing wrong with that.")

1 Item Finder (Sugar sugar! I love this card TeCHed in! It 0wnz U! {sorry, too much caffeine from my Hastings pop)

3 CPU Search (0_o… I searched for an energy a couple of times… 0_o again… it’s great to get Oaks and Lasses, as well as the Pokémon I need. It’s simply the best!)

1 Super Energy Retrieval (I NEVER ONCE used this card in the tournament… ooh wait, I did once, and it was very nice)

1 Switch (Ever since I was playing this dude with my Raindance deck and he gusted out a Blastoise, Supered it and Energy Removed it, and used Lickitung’s Supersonic {flipping heads}, and I decked out without any way to get Blastie back, I’ve put 1 in all of my decks. It’s a great card.)

1 Ecogym (No-one played Energy Removal or Super Energy Removal, except I think Stephen did… so it could’ve been useful… but wasn’t)

2 Super Energy Removals (Well, I played a couple of Supers… they’re always good)

1 Gust (It’s good, f00!)

3 Gold Berry (0wnage! Everyone, say it out loud: "Gold Berry 0wnz U!")

2 Imposter Oak’s Revenge (0_o… total 0wnage! Who says RK9 can’t run a little Trap?)

25

Energy

15 Fire Energy (Good!)

2 Metal (Great for Take Down)

2 Double Colorless Energy (Just good all-around)

1 Recycle (MAD TeCHage! {HAH, Brolin! THIS is MAD TeCHage, not some stupid Mindwave Machine that you conveniently forgot to finish reading right before it says that it ends your turn})

20

In retrospect, I would’ve removed the Eco and a Bill for a Gust of Wind and an Elm… maybe Magby for a 2nd Scyther… nah… I was too worried about Brolin’s Arcy deck to use double Scyther… still… I’d definitely drop the Magby, maybe for a Fire Energy? Maybe for a second Cleffa...

First round (BTW, this is single elimination)

AGAIN, I get no bye. I played against a fighting/fire deck, but all I saw was fighting. He has a Hitmonchan and a Hitmontop, I have a single Magby!! Oww… FTKO is possible and likely, but I have an Elm. If I get the flip, I can win… he gets the flip. NO!!! He doesn’t do anything but lay a Fighting on chan and Jab… tails! YES! I Elm… NO BASIC!!! I have a Computer Search, so I must survive a turn to grab a basic… I lay a Metal (since he might topdeck Pluspower) and Sputter for 0. He jabs, heads. I Computer Search for Scyther, and laugh at his pathetic Chan… I lay a Fire on Scy and pass… after a few turns (Defenders and Energy Removals stall me a bit) I have a Scy with 50 KO'ing the Chan and healing it with Gold Berry I KO a Hitmontop, then a Hitmonchan to win by benching out.

Second round:

I played against someone with a really pathetic rainbow deck. He had weak stuff like Charmanders and an energy-free Espeon. I just Took Down stuff for an easy win… my second easiest of the night.

Third round:

Well well… it’s my friend Breanne! (Actually, my friend’s sister)… she played Houndoom/Blaine’s Arcy… she didn’t stand a chance… how sad… she had just a Houndoor (Dark). I did the Lass/Eeeeeeek combo, leaving her with a bunch of Fire energies and a Houndoom (Revelations). She tried to Bite Cleffa… failed. I put an energy on Growlithe, and Eeeeeeeked. She attached a Fire, and Bit successfully. I retreated and Flared her Houndoor. She laid a Blaine’s Growlithe and laid an energy on it, (Shoot! There goes the easy win) and bit (not evolving, strangely) Growlithe. I laughed and Flared. I knew that next turn I could lay a Double Colorless Energy and evolve to Take Down and win… she laid a Double Colorless Energy on Blaine’s Growlithe and Body Slammed, flipping tails… but not before benching a Rocket’s Moltres. Gosh! TWICE in a row she topdecked a basic when she needed it. Oh well… I evolved and Took Down both the Growlithe and Moltres to win. Yay! After the match, I watched Brolin look stunned as he’s losing to Stephen, who I honestly believe is an inferior deck-builder* and player*, but has Water (Blastoise plus Gatr {wrong Totodile*, Croconaw*, and Gatr*} plus Dark Octillery plus Omastar). Stephen wins 6-3… 0_o… and Brolin again loses in the quarterfinals when he should’ve won… maybe Stephen actually is a better player… not a better deck-builder though…

Fourth round:

I play this dude who usually plays around with Porygon (which really would hurt ‘cause he’d make Arcy weak to Fire), but here he’s playing Blastoise + Rocket’s Mewtwo + Jynx + Ditto… oww… Water... I end up Playful Punching and Zzzzaping away a Blastoise and a Mime… although it KO’s my Elekid. Lass/Eeeeeeek really helped me… then after Taking Down a Jynx and Mewtwo, I met a brick wall. Ditto vs. Pichu… and he kept not getting energies and I kept getting tails… the Gym Leader got annoyed because we took so long… anyways, he built up a Blasty and I flipped heads (FINALLY) for the baby check KO’ing Ditto and doing 20 to Blastoise, which I Took Down next turn. I advanced to play… Stephen!

Fifth and final round:

Against Stephen… he has like a 10-trainer deck that the he says is anti-Lass (I say it’s anti-win*)… we’ll see about that! He opened with Toto (40 HP? He’s a little kooky…*) I opened with Magmar (Growlithe benched). I WIN THE COIN FLIP!!! YES!!! I lay a Pluspower and a Fire Energy, and Comp. Search for a Lass… which I use, taking away all of my hand but a Fire energy, and Stephen has just 2 Water energies… I took away almost half the trainers in his deck (including a Bill and Elm)… I Smokescreen for 20. Stephen bites for 20 (flipping heads), and I attach a Fire, Smog, and win. Sorry, Stephen! YES! I win the tourney AGAIN! MWA HA HA!

I get a bunch of cards, but my boosters weren’t there, so I get them next week. Props/Slops time!

Props to Mike (Gym Leader),

Props to Stephen for beating Brolin (See above)

Props to Scyther… game 1 could’ve turned out bad without him

Props to Cleffa… the best card in the game

Props to Lass… what a wonderful card… almost single-handedly won Game 5… I almost didn’t put it in there… Lass 0wnz U!

Props to my opponents

Well… maybe 1…

Slops to the league for having Holo Fighting energy… Why not Fire? Fire 0wnzu!

Have a nice day…

* Stephen, no offense, right? You yourself said you had no chance against either me or Brolin… if you’d just use less evolution and more trainers…

*C’mon! You didn’t REALLY think that I’d use those, did ya?
