The War Room was very disorgnanized. They had claimed "Play starts promptly at 10:30". Well, the 10 & Under didn't start until about 11:40, the 11-14 at around noon, and the 15+ well after that. Then they didn't have the equipment to sanction one of the events, so the 15+ went unsanctioned, and was conducted very informally. Let's play already!

1st Round: vs John - Another Gatr deck
He starts with a Totodile, I with a Cleffa and a Skarmory on the bench. We go back and forth for a few turns, with me getting a Toto on the bench and an energy on it. He Double Gusts it (he has no bench), evolves to Croconaw and Tackles for 20. I Balloon Berry it to the bench, evolve and attach. He DG's it again and uses Sweep Away for 50. I evolve again, Wrath, Secret Mission, Elm to get 8 W into the Discard and Riptide for a win (still no bench). 1-0

2nd Round: vs Robert NR Piloswine (Anti-Gatr)
Robert told me before the tourney started his deck was designed to beat Gatr. We'll see, I guess. No blow by blow, this was a long game. He had great luck with flips, I had awful. For example, he used 3 Focus Bands, and flipped 3 heads. I used 2, flipped 2 tails. I also flipped 4 straight tails against Pichu. After 30 minutes, I had him beaten; I had a Skarmory with 3 Metals on it, he had a Pichu with 20 damage, a Cleffa, and a ND Scyther with 30 damage. He would have to flip 4 heads with that Scyther to do any damage at all! Just then the Judge says "Time". He has 1 prize left, I have 2. I said "Man, I have him beaten. He can't even damage me!" I guess the Judge agreed, he gave me the win. 2-0

3rd Round: vs Tojo Sabrina's Alakazam/SI Mew/Golbat
We both start very slowly, me with just a Skarmory, him with Mew. He soon had a Misty's Psyduck (?) active & hits me for 20. 'Duck and Skar battle back and forth for a while, with him hitting flips to draw cards but no more damage. Skarmory KO's 'Duck using Claw(!). After a while, I finally get a Gatr going and draw some prizes before it gets KO'd. I build another and ask the Judge how much time. He says "30 seconds", so I quickly Elm for enough energy to draw my last prize. 3-0

4th Round (Quarter Final): vs. (sorry, I forgot) Misty's Poliwrath
We both start fairly slowly. I had a Cleffa & a Skarmory, I Eeeeeek until I can start building Gatr, then send up Skarmory to battle. He has some bad flips, and doesn't do much damage (Misty's Poliwag/Whirl/Wrath). Before long, Skarmory has all 4 Metals on him, and Gatr's waiting in the wings. He finally figures out that M's Whirl can remove energy, so he starts using that attack. 1 Metal is removed, I immediately Balloon Berry for Feraligatr and Riptide for a few more prizes, KOing a M's 'Wrath for my last prize. 4-0

At this point, only 1 other player was undefeated. The Judges determined that we'd skip the Semi's, and Brad and I would battle for the Championship.

Championship: vs. Brad Blaine's Arcanine/Typhlosion
He wins the coin flip, I Mulligan twice. That was about all the luck he had in this game. He starts with B's Growlithe and Cyndaquil on the bench. I have Cleffa active and Skarmory on the Bench. He attaches to Cyn and passes. I Wrath, bench 2 Totos, attach to Cleffa, Eeeeeek. He draws, attaches a Focus Band to Cyn, passes. I promote Croconaw and Tackle for 40 (Weakness). On it goes. I use Sweep Away to draw 2-3 prizes and put W in the Discard. I then evolve to Feral and Riptide. He Heat Tackles for 40. I use Trash Exchange and get 1 W(!). I Balloon Berry Feral to the bench and Eeeeeek. He flips tails against Cleffa. I play an Ecogym to get rid of Cinnabar and Riptide for my last prize. Brad did play a few Elms, but he had some very bad luck, including a SERIOUS energy shortage. I probably would have done better had I not evolved Feral. I wouldn't have had to worry about W in the Discard, and Croco could KO any of his Pokes with 1 Sweep Away, anyway.
