Crayola's Revenge

Wazzup, Pojoholics. Daniel Duterte here with a deck report from good ol' Games Galore in Raleigh. I'm using a Psychic Wigglytuff deck called Crayola's Revenge. It's called that because I built a deck like this called Wigglytuff and the Purple Crayon which you can see in the June 2000 deck reports. I made one change before the match to combat any Narrow Gym.

Crayola's Revenge v.1.0

Pokemon (14)
4 Jigglypuff
3 Wigglytuff
3 Scyther
3 Mewtwo (Movie)
1 Erika's Dratini
Trainers (32)
3 Bill
4 Professor Oak
4 Computer Search
3 Item Finder
4 PlusPower
3 Gust of Wind
3 Scoop Up
2 Rocket's Sneak Attack
2 Lass
3 Nightly Garbage Run
1 Celedon City Gym
Energy (14)
7 Psychic Energy
3 Full Heal Energy
4 Double Colorless

The strategy is Turbo Wigglytuff: Get Wiggly on turn two with PlusPowers ready and destroy Haymakers and anything else that comes its way. Turbo Wiggly only needs three Wigglytuff because it has so much card drawing. Scyther is the best card in the game because it's so versitile and is strong, which most splashable creatures lack in. Movie Mewtwo is an excellent card and can clean up the late-game. Erika's Dratini kicks ass against Haymaker! And in my match I faced four Hays in a row! It goes well as a Haymaker killer along side Wigglytuff.

I swapped out Bill for a Celedon Gym when I saw the large number of players using Narrow Gym. Four Professor Oaks are musts in speed decks, mainly for ratios because using four Oaks is dangerous. Computer Search is da bomb trainer which is why I have four. Item Finder is your 7th PlusPower, 5th Rocket's Sneak Attack or whatever! Breaks the four of a kind limit which rules! PlusPower is what helps Wiggly win games. It helps you destroy Hays in one swipe. Gust of Wind lets you take out threats or weenies like Hitmonchan or a roughed up Chansey. Scoop Up is to get out stalling creatures and a switch at the expense of energy and the evolution card if you used a Wigglytuff. Rocket's Sneak Attack and Lass are hand disruption and get rid of Energy Removals, Oaks, and Computer Searches which could hamper your game. Nightly Garbage Run is anti-decking and putting Wigglytuffs and energy back in. Celedon Gym is just for Narrow Gym and that's the most useful Gym I could find that I had.

The Tournament
About 20 or so people showed up. It's five rounds of swiss style and the person with the best record wins with the difficulty of wins being a tie-break thanks to the fancy DCI program. I look around just to metagame and see a few evolution decks but mainly Haymakers and Sponges. I have some cash so I go buy green sleeve protectors. Those things are slick when you buy them, my cards slipped out a lot when I shuffled them for the first time! Anyway, it's tourney time and the opening pairings have been announced!

Round 1 vs. Austin w/ Electamar Haymaker
I was afraid because this kid is good and so are his friends Tim (Rain Dance) and Carson (Sponge and person who wins 90% of the tournaments). I stalled out with Scythers and Mewtwos for position and started scooping up and busted out Wigglytuff and started steamrolling him. His Electabuzz gave me a little trouble, but I eventually killed him. Speaking of Tim, he faced my brother who was playing Rain Dance as well and my bro won! Wow!
Record 1-0

Round 2 vs. Caitlin w/ Haymaker
We started late becuase her automatic shuffler wasn't working and I was getting really pissed. She's only about seven and her playing ability shows for it as you'll see. I started out with Scyther and Erika's Dratini and she had a lone Scyther. Sent out Erika's Dratini and started Tail Striking Scyther. In the middle of this a yellow jacket came through the door and we paused to swat and destroy it. Back to the action. I eventually killed it with three counters on Erika's Dratini and then she sent out an Electabuzz and killed it and then sent a Wigglytuff and she energy removaled me and tried to thundershock me but no paralysis. I scooped up Wigglytuff and sent out Movie Mewtwo and Energy Absorbed. Her turn, I'm thinking Thundershock but no, she used Thunderpunch, so I won with Psyburn!
Record 2-0

In the middle of this I decided I was hungry and took out the Spam sandwich I made, which had gotten stale. Now I know never toast bread you'll use later like for a lunch! Yuck!

Round 3 vs. Ben w/ Haymaker
I know Ben from school and he's pretty good. This is only his third tourney and he didn't play at all in the summer because of vacation and missed a lot of tournaments! He normally plays Rain Dance and was contemplating Haymaker or a Dark Arbok deck. Obviously he starts with Haymaker.

This started out close and was afraid I was going to lose. In the middle of the match the power went out! That sucked and we played with no air conditioning. Anyway he knocked out one of my Movie Mewtwos and I started beating down with a Wigglytuff but Hitmonchan came and for about five minutes we were deadlocked at 4 prizes left to 5 in my favor. I stalled with a Scyther and constantly Lassed and Rocket Sneak Attacked. At one point I lassed the rest of his hand away and I had an energy drought with a full bench, a Wiggly in my hand, some Scoop Ups, but no energy or trainers. At this point it was Draw, Go until I started drawing energy and began dropping energy and I sent out Wiggly and got an Oak and was in control the rest of the way!
Record 3-0

Round 4 vs. Brianna w/ (good lord) Haymaker!
Good lord, another Haymaker. Well, now because of the power outage, Cory the gym leader can't do pairings with the computer because he lost everything, but he printed out the matchups with points and records, so we're salvaged! Now we have to use Prize Differential for tie-breaks and pairings instead of the difficulty of the wins. Well, I'm undefeated and I thought I would face this Rocket's Snorlax kid, but he faced a 2-1 kid and I faced another undefeated kid I didn't hear about. She and her brother drove all the way to Baltimore just for the first qualifier! What a waste when the High Point qualifier is in three weeks! She won 24 packs for second there, and her brother Bryson who's 11 won 1st and a box of Gym Hereos in the 10 and under division! He lied about his age and got the big prize and invite! That's just wrong! Anyway, here we go.

It started really slow. Nine minutes into the game and no one has taken a prize! I stalled with Scythers against Hitmonchans and was armed with Scoops. I busted out a Mewtwo and killed some of her Pokemon such as Ditto and Hitmonchan. Then a Hitmonchan got to me. I busted out Wigglytuff and now I have one prize and I'm facing a Scyther with Wiggly. I've burned my PlusPowers and I was just Super Energy Removaled. Seven cards are left in my deckI have a Jigglypuff that's powered for evolution. I have a Scoop Up, two Nightly Garbage Runs, an Item Finder, and some basics I don't need. I've only burned one Item Finder. I Scoop Up Wigglytuff (gasp) and send out Jigglypuff. That's my last Wigglytuff. But I Garbage Run for them all back, so now I have ten cards left. I Item finder for an Oak and she looks suprised and thinks I'll deck. But I got what I needed. Slap Wigglytuff down and use the last Item Finder for a PlusPower to get the final KO! (gasp) I'm 4-0, this is the best I've ever done so far! I might win!
Record 4-0

Round 5 vs. Cory (not the Gym Leader) w/ Dark Muk deck
Well, Rocket's Snorlax kid lost to Carson White, so I'm the only undefeated. I'm thinking I'm going to face Carson with a Sponge deck and we're talking about what he needs to win because he's 4-0 and has +2 prize differential vs. my +5. Well, guess what, I'm wrong. Cory Bullock beat Brianna and had +5 differential leading the 3-1 kids so he's got me and all he needs to do is beat me by at least a prize. I'm really nervous because if I win I've won the tournament. Cory's deck has a Rocket's Training Gym Dark Muk comboed with Dodrio to nullify Training Gyms retreat for him and has Jungle and Rocket's Scythers.

Anyway, I go first and I Sneak Attack him and he has Grass Energy, an Energy Removal, Dark Muk, and two PlusPowers. I burn Energy Removal and I slap a Psychic on him and Lullaby. He rolls tails. He slaps a grass on him and says go. I bust Wiggly out and play a DCE and Oak. I filled up my bench and killed Grimer. He sends Scyther and says go. I PlusPower and kills him. He sends a Doduo and says go and I win! Yay, my first tourney win! Oh yeah!
Record 5-0, Place: Tournament Winner!

I won my first tournament and went undefeated! Yes! I got four Gym Heroes booster packs in which my rares were a foil Rocket's Moltres, a foil Misty's Tentacruel, a rare Misty's Goldeen (nnng), and a rare Misty's Tentacool (double-nnng). My brother got a holo Brock and a holo Erika's Dragonair. Great day!

Overall, I think I had some lucky pairings. Facing four Haymakers in a row just helped Wiggly kill a lot of Pokemon! Luckily I saw no Narrow Gym, which was good. Erika's Dratini is very situational and I think I will leave the single in there. I want to find a way to put No Removal Gym so I can use a more helpful Gym. Might add some Challenge cards like maybe Rocket's Zapdos instead of Mewtwo or something.
