I played at a tournement at Toys 'R Us on Clarkson Blvd, St. Louis last
week.  There were around 25 people there.

Here's my deck:

Pokemon:
4    Venonat
4    Venomoth
4    Abra
4    Kadadra
2    Dratini
2    Dragonair

Energies:
12  Psychic
10  Grass
4    DCE

Trainers:
4    Bill
4    ER
2    SER
2    Switch
1    Gust of Wind
1    Energy Retrieval

This deck is built to quickly build up and evolve.  Venomoth's 2G
requirement means that several can be built up quickly.  Kadabra needs
only 2P, 1C to do 50.  Only Dewgong can match this.  Recover is OK.
Dragonair's Hyper Beam attack is a killer!  Only three types are used to
give the best chances of getting the right evolution card.
Energy Removals and Supers are great, and they pretty much replace the
horrible potion family!  They can prevent the opponent from attacking.
Charizard about to wipe you out?  Play ER and SER, and your troubles are
over!  Bill is just plain great, and energy retrieval is for those nasty
times when you can't get enough energy.  Switch covers up for Kadabra's
ugly retreat cost.

Here's what happened at the tourney:

Round one:
I draw an OK hand, with two Venonat, two ER, a Bill, and two grass
energy.  My opponent is playing a Haymaker.  He benches a Hitmonlee and
uses Machop.  I win the flip.  First thing's first.  Bill!  I get
Venomoth and Dragonair.  Cool!  I attach G to Venonat1 and paralyze.
The guy attaches F to Hitmonlee.  The card I draw is Abra.  I play it.
I attach G to Venonat1 and evolve.  I turn into psychic and attack.
Heads!  My attack does 30.  He attaches F to Hitmonlee and watches
Machop die.  This time, he wins the flip.  Hitmonlee Strech Kicks
Venonat2.  I play both ERs to prevent him from killing Venonat2.  I draw
a P energy and give it to Abra.  Then, I Venom Powder as a psychic.
This goes on until his Hitmonlee dies off after two more VPs, and that's
the game!
1-0

Round Two:
I'm playing against a dude with a lightning-fighting deck.  He doesn't
get a basic for two turns straight.  I draw two cards, instead of four.
My starting hand is SWEET!  I have Dratini, Dragonair, 3 DCE, and 2
Bill.  I win the flip.  He plays a Pikachu and Magnimite.  Pik is his
basic.  I play both Bills, meaning that I now have 11 cards.  I draw a P
energy.  I give Dratini DCE and evolve.  Here's my hand at that point:
Abra, 2 Kadabra, 2 P energy, 2 DCE, and an ER.  Not bad...  I end up
killing all of his pokemon with Super Psy.  He gets one fossil Raich,
but that's the only evolution he gets the whole game.  My bench, at the
end of the game, was 2 Dragonair, 2 Kadabra, and a Venomoth.  My active
was Kadabra.
2-0

Round 3:
I'm playing against a spoiled brat who's got a Beat-down deck.  I'm sure
he has no clue how to play, 'cause he tries to attach one energy per
pokemon per turn.  He also benches a Raticate as a basic.  I kill him
with four Venomoths.
3-0

Round 4:
This game's against a guy named Teddy.  He has an awesome anti-basic
energy denial deck  His deck's all Machop, Hitmonchan, and Hitmonlee.  I
have some initial energy problems, and a nightmare hand, but I end up
killing all of his pokemon with an over-energized Venomoth and an even
more over-energized Kadabra.  I find that he has 4 ER, 4 SER, 4 Item
Finder, and 4 recycle in his deck.  It's possible to continue reusing ER
and SER for quite a while with his deck.
4-0

Round 5:
Another tough round.  My opponent is a friend named Dave.  He runs
lightning.  I get too many basics and too few evolution cards.  However,
most of them are Kadabras.  I get one Venomoth.  I keep on confusing and
poisoning his pokemon, and finishing them off with Super Psy.  He kills
three of my four Kadabra with self-destruct moves and Chain Lighning.
Once again, I pull off a win.
5-0

Round 6:
Very, very boring.  This guy's made it pretty far with his stall deck.
He says that he has four onix and four chansey.  Thanks!  I have to
resist the temptation of playing Bill the whole game.  It's like trying
not to go to the bathroom for a few days.  Ug.  I win, though, thanks to
my Kadabras and fighting-resistant Venonats.  Energy isn't a problem in
this game, though.  I almost get decked.
6-0

Final Round!
This was my revenge against Rain Dance decks!  I start with a killer
opening hand--Abra, Kadabra, Venonat, three P energy, and a Bill.  I win
the flip, and play Bill.  I draw three cards (one is the card you draw
every turn).  One is a P energy, one is a G energy, and one is an SER.
I paralyze his Articuno.  He complains of a drought.  He attaches one
water energy to Seal on his bench and plays Bill.  My turn.  I draw a
Venomoth (Cool!) and evolve Venonat.  Then, it attach energy to Abra and
evolve it.  Nothing happens on my opponent's turn.  I attach an energy
to Kadabra and Super Psy his Articuno.  He attaches another energy to
Seal and plays another Bill.  I keep on building up Dragonairs and
Venomoths.  I win by drying him up with ER, SER, and Hyper Beam.
Kadabra doesn't have as big of an effect, although it killed Blastoise.
I was attacked only once, thanks to energy denial.
7-0

The prizes I got were six 1st ed Base boosters and a Promo American
Mew.  Not bad!
