High Tide T.E. By: D. Rees Hi. I am the one who made the High Tide deck. Well, after a lot of changing and rethinking, I have played in a tournament with what a feel is a much better deck. It wasn't a DCI-sanctioned tourney, just one at a local card shop. They haven'e gotten DCi-sanction yet, but are planning on it soon. Still, it was a competitive tourney. The rounds are simply one game and the tourney is single-elimination. Round 1 I end up fighting this guy who has more or less a modified starter deck. He tries getting as far as he can with fighting Pokémon alone, but eventually he's forced into using fire. I easily take out his fire Pokémon and win. Round 2 I played a guy who had a mono-fire deck. I don't know what it is, but lots of people in this tourney were using fire. The only basic Pokémon I had to start was Chansey, who stalled about 10 turns before being killed. Chansey was a life-saver. During those turns, I accumulated a Blastoise and a Dewgong who I loaded up with energy. His fire Pokémon were then easily beaten by my water Pokémon. He had a good deck, but the weakness factor was to much to overcome. Round 3 This guy put up a GREAT fight with a Psychic/Water deck. It was a classic back-and-forth battle. His Mewtwos and Gyaradoses were both forces to be reckoned with. In the end, I got out Blastoise and rain danced to any Pokémon who became active. I ended up winning, but it was close. Round 4 A guy with a mono-fighting deck was the challenger. His Machamp and Hitmonchans were quite annoying, but thanks to a couple fully loaded Gyaradoses, a la rain dance, I was the one who walked away the winner. Round 5: The Finals Here we were, mono-water and grass/lightning. Who do you think won? Well, I got a pretty bad draw and things stunk right from the start. His Venusaur stomped all over my Gyarados and he had this annoying Electabuzz which decided it didn't like my Blastoise or Dewgong. I came back from a bad draw to get a hand that would beat most, but he just had all the right types of Pokémon and he won. I have to congratulate him for his anti-water deck. It must have been hard for him to get by all of those fire decks, or maybe he didn't have to play one. Anyway, I came in second and walked home with some card protectors and a couple boosters. Not bad, not bad! Now for the contents of my deck: 27 Water Energies 1 Double Colorless Energy 2 Chanseys (nice stalling Pokémon- also good for suicide when he's low on energy, if you have already given him some energy) 3 Squirtles 2 Wartortles 2 Blastoises (Pokémon Power's sweet and his attack's not too shabby either) 3 Magikarps 2 Gyaradoses (duh! This guy's a beast!) 2 Staryus (decent basic Pokémon- 20 attack for 1 energy is nice- especially against fire where it does 40) 4 Seels 4 Dewgongs (fairly common and almost as good as Blastoise or Gyarados) 1 Super Potion (can help out when you need HP) 1 Bill (always nice- should have more of these, but for some reason, I've been deprived and have only gotten 1) 3 Pokémon Breeders (the better chance I have of getting Blastoise out and quick, the more of a chance of winning- works well w/ comp. search) 3 Computer Searches (for finding that missing evolution card or Chansey or whatever) There you have it: the High Tide Tournament Edition deck. I'll probably still keep changing it around as I get better cards. If you have comments or suggestions, you can e-mail me at oodevin@aol.com. This deck is nice because it has strong, powerful Pokémon with good HP and good ways of getting them. Rain dance helps SOOOO much.
