Everyone's favorite first traveling companion comes back in top form to help more! Misty is back and more determined than ever before!

Course when you're raring to go like Misty, you've gotta keep a level head. Otherwise, you might end up with something that looks like a good idea but maybe it's not. For instance, Misty's Determination doesn't seem that bad. You get to discard a card from your hand and then pick another card from the top 8 cards of your deck to replace it. Once you're done, you shuffle the rest back into the deck - same old, same old.

On the one hand, you've got the advantage of picking out which card you get to discard as well as which card you add to your hand. This can help set you up on later turns for stuff like VS Seeker or any form of Energy accelerator that grabs Energy from the discard or even helps out with Vespiquen-based Vengeance decks. And since there's no limit to what card you can grab, you'll be able to snatch anything you need for that turn.

On the other hand, though, Misty's Determination is already outclassed by another Supporter: Professor Sycamore. Not only does he toss out your whole hand, but he also lets you draw the top 7 cards of your deck - far more than what Misty's Determination can get you. Not to mention Sycamore has the advantage of being playable even if you have no other cards in your hand, whereas Misty's Determination presumably can't. Not to mention you're only limited to whatever's in the top 8 cards of your deck, which if you're looking for a very particular card, you're not guaranteed to find it on top.

So what does that mean for Misty's Determination? Well, she's going to end up being used rarely if ever. Anything it can discard, Sycamore can discard better, and anything it can grab, there are cards that can do it better. Basically, she's a 1-for-1 that costs you an extra card to maybe get what you want, and in competitive play at least, that's not good enough to warrant your Supporter for the turn. It's hard to compete against a guy who can toss everything you need to toss...

Rating

Standard: 2/5 (by no means a bad card, but just not a fully advantageous one)

Expanded: 2/5 (she tries very hard to do what she can, but there are ultimately better cards for the job)

Limited: 3/5 (though maybe she'll get run in BREAK Evolution decks? but then again, Sycamore does it better...)

Arora Notealus: It's a shame that Misty didn't get something better to come back with. She could have easily been retooled to provide more Water support, kinda like Blacksmith from back in Flashfire. Or even better, she could've borrowed one of the effects of her older cards like Misty's Tears or Misty's Wrath or even just regular Misty. It would've been interesting to say the least!

Misty’s Determination is a new Supporter that allows you to discard one card from hand in order to look at the top eight cards of your deck, select one to add to hand then shuffle the rest into your deck.  Maybe it is because I have been researching older cards the last few weeks but the only real similar card I can think of right now is Forest Guardian, which dates all the way back to Aquapolis.  It made you shuffle your deck, then had you select one of seven cards from the top of it, then had you shuffle the rest back in.  That first shuffle was annoying is neither good nor bad.  It made it harder to cheat and could freshen up a stale top of your deck (relevant to the metagame of the time) but it also meant you could not take advantage of any cards you knew were already on top of your deck (either through an effect that looked at or selected the top cards of your deck).  Forest Guardian was not a good card back then but neither was it a bad card; however I don’t think losing the initial shuffle and increasing the range by one warrants adding a discard cost, let alone keeps up with the power creep in the game.

This is not to say the card is useless; the smaller your deck is the more likely you are to get exactly what you want (unless it is not in the deck).  There may be some decks that need a generic search option, perhaps for building a delicate combo, and the other search cards just are not worth it.  For the most part I would rather build my deck with the usual compliment of draw and search power, accepting that I won’t have unrestricted (in terms of what it can grab) search as a Supporter without it being part of a combo or conditional.  Search is a bit difficult to pin down for the going rate.  If you enjoy algebra, try creating variables for different facets of search and write things out as equations.  No I am not going to give an actual example as the idea just hit me and it is very time consuming.  Without making equations, consider how Computer Search compares with Ultra Ball: everything is the same except being an Ace Spec upgrades searching for a Pokémon into searching for any card.  Then consider how combos mess with things: Skyla can get any Trainer from your deck and if you have Professor’s Letter, Ultra Ball, and two cards in hand to spare you can get anything in your deck except a Special Energy card.  Now consider  Battle Compressor, two cards discarded, and two copies of Puzzle of Time in hand, you can get any two cards you want.  Teammates can also get you any two cards you want, but at the cost of your Supporter for the turn and then only if one of your Pokémon was KO’d during your opponent’s previous turn.

I would not bother with Misty’s Determination in either Standard or Expanded, but as you already should suspect it is a must run in Limited play where any draw or search is worth considering and something like this is a must run.  As such the score is about how effective I expect it to be when used.  Limited Format decks are 40 cards total, so searching a large percentage of your deck in this format helps as well.

Ratings

Standard: 2/5

Expanded: 1.9/5

Limited: 4/5

Summary: I was quite happy when Giovanni’s Scheme ended up being a good card even though I thought little of it when we reviewed it.  Hopefully that will happen again as I do not think that Misty’s Determination is worth the effort right now.
