Barbaracle

We started the week with a silly fun card, and we end it the same way. Barbaracle is admittedly a whole lot better than Maractus, but still short of being truly playable.

Boulder Crush is pretty uninteresting, but Rock Rush is the fun attack that may even seem tempting at first: it costs two Fighting Energy and does 30 damage for each Fighting you discard from your hand. In theory this means no practical damage cap, so you could OHKO anything with two Energy on a Stage 1!

In practice, things are a little bit different. Even with Superior Energy Retrieval (plus the regular one and Super Rod) in the format, it’s next to impossible to keep using Rock Rush for OHKOs on those big EX Pokémon that everyone uses: discarding five Energy a turn would be needed for that. Not to mention the fact that he’s pretty easily KO’d himself with just 110 HP, meaning that you then need the time to manually attack two Energy to another one.

Try him for casual play if you like, but Barbaracle isn’t a tournament quality card.

Rating

Modified: 2.25 (could be fun, I guess)

Limited: 2.25 (reasonably solid for a Stage 1, but the Energy demands are too much)

aroramage

Hello again! It's aroramage back again with another card review for the new Flashfire set! Today we've got the master of slicing and dicing, Barbaracle! To think it takes seven Binacle to make this guy! Luckily you only need the one, but will it be worth it?

Barbaracle has two attacks, one of which is a vanilla 3-Energy Boulder Crush for 80. Not bad, but not great either, and the fact that all the energy need to be Fighting limits it greatly. Of course Barbaracle isn't the kind of guy you play for his Boulder Crush. Nahhh, you'd want to use his first attack, Rock Rush.

Multipliers can be fun, like with Barbaracle's Rock Rush. All you need is 2 Fighting Energy attached to him, and after that, it's just a matter of how much Fighting Energy you've got in hand. You see for each Fighting Energy you discard for Rock Rush, it deals 30 damage. So 2 Fighting Energy gives you 60, 3 for 90, and all the way up to 6 for 180 to KO a Pokemon-EX!!

True to form, though, this is a high-risk attack. Most of the time you'll have to discard your entire hand just to deal enough damage for a KO - and that's provided you're aiming for the KO like you should. You might be able to combo it with Juniper if you feel like trying to draw a lot of Fighting Energy, but it's better to work with Professor's Letter to add 2 at a time and go for that.

Right now, Barbaracle's just got an attack with potential that's normally too much to work with, but with the upcoming Furious Fists expansion bringing with it some cool Fighting-support in the form of a new Energy and a damage-increasing Arena, Barbaracle may in the future have a spot in Fighting decks.

...or maybe it'll just be nice and cozy in your binder.

Rating

Modified: 2.5/5 (maybe a 3 when Furious Fists comes out)

Limited: 3/5 (once again, barring a Pokemon-EX showing up, you should be...okay)

Arora Notealus: Come at me, bro! I've got claws on hands for DAYS!!

Weekend Thought: This week we've come across some cards that make for interesting combinations (notably in the latter half). What other combos/uses can you come up with based around these cards?
