Simisear (XY)

We got a flurry of Monkey Trio cards when Black and White was first released. The supply has slowed down somewhat, but they still seem popular with the designers so it’s no surprise to see them show up in XY.

As far as competitive play goes, this card is a bit of a non-event. Low HP Stage 1s would need to have a fantastic attack (like Zoroark) or a great Ability (like Garbodor) to make any kind of impact. Simisear has neither of these. Yawn inflicts Sleep, which is an unreliable way of buying a turn, while Flamethrower does a decent amount of damage (90), but the three Energy cost makes it unworkable on such a weak Pokémon. There are lots and lots of better cards out there that can hit for even more damage.

In the context of the format, Simisear is just a mediocre Stage 1 . . . and there isn’t much of a place for those besides the binder.

Rating

Modified: 1.5 (outclassed by everything that people actually use)

Limited: 3 (not too bad here)

Simisear.

Unlimited 150 review.
Another set, another B&W monkey Pokémon… the TCG designers seriously have a serious obsession with these Pokémon and yet, they don’t seem to want to make a really good one!

It’s not that it’s a terrible card, it’s a step up from its Emerging Powers version but there’s the old Reshiram test to pass, is this Stage 1 better than Basic Reshiram? With less HP and lower damage output the answer is probably no, even with Reshiram counting as EX in this format.

If they’d print a Pansear with Ascension or some other way to Evolve itself then these Pokémon could actually be pretty good in U150. As it is, Collect isn’t a reliable way to set up and you could do better for a Stage 1 Fire type such as Magmortar or Ninetales. If you love Simisear you could probably make an ok deck with it, but I’ve personally never met a single person who isn’t just sick of these Pokémon showing up in sets!

Rating: 3 (Not bad, just outclassed.)
