Lunatone (XY)

Hello and welcome to another week spent looking at some Pokémon from the new XY Set. We are going to kick it off with a review of Lunatone.

Y’know there have been times when the designers have made powerful combos out of Lunatone and Solrock. There are times when they have at least made them interesting. This is not one of times.

Yes, there is a very basic combo with Solrock XY which allows it to do 40 damage very cheaply, but that’s nowhere near enough to make these low HP unevolving Basics playable. Aside from that, Lunatone does have a nice card drawing attack in Double Draw, but it’s a lot less nice now that you can’t use it if you go first and in any case Virizion LTR does the same thing while being a better card in just about every way possible. Meanwhile, Moonblast is just awful. Two Energy for 20 damage and an almost meaningless reduction in the damage it takes next turn. This is one of the worst value attacks I have seen in a while.

Good in limited simply because it draws cards, Lunatone has no place in competitive play.

Modified: 1.25 (people don’t even play Virizion any more)

Limited: 4.25 (you would love to open with it)

Lunatone.
Unlimited 150 review.

Solrock and Lunatone have had some success in previous Standard formats when they were designed to work together to shut down specific, common threats in the metagame. The new Lunatone makes an ok starter with Double Draw but Moonblast isn’t a very impressive attack and doesn’t get any bonus for having Solrock in play. It’s kind of hard to review this card without taking into account its partner Solrock, which does an impressive 40 for 1 with Lunatone in play. Again, this is a useful attack for the start of the game for taking out opposing starters before they accumulate too much advantage.

The key Solrock and Lunatone are the ones from Legend Maker which shut down the Poke-Powers of Fire and Normal type Pokémon respectively when you have their partner Pokémon in play. These might not always be useful, but are worth considering depending on your local meta. There’s some other useful effects spread through the Solrock and Lunatone cards printed (Lunatone Supreme Victors’ immunity to LV.X for example) and being Basic Pokémon means you can sprinkle just which ones you feel are required.

Overall, this new Lunatone doesn’t bring too much to support its Solrock brothers other than having decent HP and being a decent starter. If you are going to run a full 4 / 4 line of these Pokémon though, this isn’t a bad choice.

Rating: 2.5 (A decent Lunatone, but it lacks a standout effect for a historically tech-based Pokémon)
