Volcarona (Plasma Blast)

Our final card of the week is another fragile stage 1: Volcarona. It’s obviously designed to offer a bit of support to Plasma decks, though it is really hard to see how or why it would fit in there.

Solar Transporter only costs one Energy and does no damage, but it does reveal the top 5 cards of your deck and allow you to put any Team Plasma cards into your hand while discarding the rest. Do Plasma decks really need this? They have Team Plasma Ball to fetch Pokémon, Colress Machine to grab Plasma Energy, and even Skyla to get Hypnotoxic Laser if need be. I just can’t see why they would want to dedicate deck and Bench space to a hit-and-miss Pokémon like Volcarona rather than, say, run more draw cards.

Leech Life, the second attack, doesn’t really offer anything either. Three Energy for 50 is poor these days, and the healing effect isn’t much use when you only have 100 HP. Fire Typing is nice with Genesect being popular, but Volcarona can’t even OHKO with a relatively expensive attack. Nope, there really isn’t any reason to put this in any Plasma deck I have ever seen or heard of.

Rating

Modified: 1.5 (unnecessary)

Limited: 2.25 (uh, ok if you have a lot of Plasma stuff, but be careful of deck out)
