Lopunny

Today’s card is the always-prettyful Lopunny.

With only 80 HP, this is quite a fragile Stage 1 card, and that isn’t helped by Fighting Weakness. The Retreat cost of one is ok though.

Lopunny also has a PokePower, Relaxing Shower, which allows you to discard an Energy Card from your Hand and remove a damage counter from each of your Pokémon. There are a few other cards that have similar effects and oddly enough they all seem to be feminine Pokemon. Blissey PL will let you remove two damage counters at the cost of discarding any card, but only from one Pokémon; meanwhile, Nidoqueen RR will remove a damage counter from each of your Pokémon between each turn, but she is a Stage 2 and her Maternal Comfort PokeBody can be shut off by Dialga G LV X.

Usually, Nidoqueen will be the first choice Pokémon to do the healing job, but I can see Lopunny working in those decks that benefit from Energy discarding. Maybe in a Kingdra deck which focuses on Aqua Stream, or in a Tyranitar deck to put Energy in the discard for Darkness Drive.

Lopunny’s single attack is nothing special, doing 40 damage for [C][C] and removing all Special Conditions from Lopunny. Not terrible, but 40 damage isn’t even going to worry a Colourless-Weak Pokémon like Garchomp C LV X or Flygon.

So, Lopunny may find a role to play in a rogue deck focusing on tanking, healing, and using discarded Energy. There aren’t really any of those at the top tables these days, so Lopunny probably won’t see much play for the foreseeable future, but it’s a card that you should keep in mind when deckbuilding. Who knows, you may be the one to put her to good use.

Modified: 2.25 (for most decks, there are better alternatives)

Limited: 3.75 (plenty of Energy to discard in this low damage format. Lopunny is a reasonable attacker here too)

Lopunny (LV.40)

Platinum--Arceus, #21

Today's card of the day is Lopunny, LV.41, from Platinum--Arceus.

Relaxing Shower:  This Poké-Power allows you to discard an Energy card from your hand to remove one damage counter from each of your Pokémon.  I dislike discarding Energy cards to remove little damage from my Pokémon, and doubt this Poké-Power greatly benefits the user.  I would let my Pokémon endure damage and use Night Maintenance to retrieve them and any attached Basic Energy cards to shuffle into my deck for later use.

Hover Heal:  This attack deals 40 damage for 2 Energy, and removes all Special Contiditions from Lopunny.  It has a nice attack cost that deals moderate damage and heals conditions.  It slightly makes up for Relaxing Shower.

Stats:  Its 80 HP is typical for Stage 1 evolved Pokémon.  Its +20 weakness from Fighting-type Pokémon's attacks is common with Machamp running around.  Its one Energy retreat cost is good.
