At first, I saw this card, and I got excited….then I thought about it some more and I got less excited…then I played it a bit in limited and got unhappy with it.

Draw an extra card every turn!  WOW!  This has potential right?

Until you look at the bench space you have used with Dodrio that could have been used for Claydol GE, drawing 1-6 cards a turn…with a better attack (yes, Claydol has an attack, read the card).

Frankly I would rather use Uxie, and be able to GET IT OUT OF THE WAY if I need to.

I know, I know, there is no max hand size with Dodrio…who cares?  If you have a large hand, then you are not getting things done, and are probably in trouble…Gengar is out there you know!

So, we have a card that looks good, and is not.  Is that the subtitle to this whole set???

Modified…a good idea, but not a great one.  Free retreat is helpful…2.5/5  Some redeeming qualities.

Limited…a very good idea, but not a game-breaking one…trust me, I TRIED!!!  Too hard to search for the basic, and evolution in limited, and you aren’t going to get a 3-3 line of a rare, especially this one.  4/5

A REAL set comes out this weekend…advent of arceus…go to www.mopokemon.com for locations, since the usual site is down!!!

Dodrio Lv 32 SV

Dodrio SV is a card that did get some attention before it was released. This was entirely due to its PokePower Echo Draw which simply allows the player to draw an extra card during their turn.

Now while extra draw that doesn’t use up an attack or require the Pokémon to be active is never going to be a bad thing, the issue is: is it worth the Bench space and the resources needed to get it on to the Bench?

Unfortunately, the answer is: no. Not when we have so many better alternatives to choose from.

Claydol GE, Uxie LA, Uxie LV X, even Porygon 2 GE with the right Supporters ALL provide superior draw to Dodrio. There is simply no reason to run this card unless you have absolutely no access to any of those mentioned above. Even then, you are probably better off saving the Bench space and playing more draw Supporters or Pokedex.

Dodrio SV’s other attributes don’t give you any more reason to include it in a deck either. It’s only attack, Drill Peck does a very inadequate 50 for three Energy. Its Weakness to Lightning also makes it an easy target for Luxray GL LV X, though I am not sure they would waste its attack on a Dodrio. Fighting Resistance and Free Retreat are nice, but it would take a lot more than that to make this card playable in Modified.

Rating

Modified: 1.5 (completely outclassed by other draw support)
Limited: 4.5 (here it can actually shine. There is virtually no other source of draw in the set, so Dodrio is a very nice Pokémon to have on your Bench).
Guy Sorry everybody for missing the reviews the past few days, but here we go again with Dodrio. Dodrio is sort of interesting. When I first started playing again a few months ago, I used a 2-2 Dodrio line as a poor man's Claydol. Now, in no way, shape, or form am I equivocating Dodrio with Claydol. However, if you are new to the game, and do not have 50 bucks to drop on 2 Claydol on ebay, Dodrio MAY suffice until you gather enough good stuff to trade for a Claydol or 2. You most likely won't use Dodrio's attack, but at least you could if you need to. His free retreat is nice, weakness to lightning is BAD, and resistance to fighting is GOOD. Overall I would say Dodrio is good for beginners. DO NOT go to a tournament with only a Dodrio line for your draw engine and expect to keep pace with your opponents' speed.

Modified: 2.75/5
Limited: 3/5 (any draw is good draw in limited)
Kevin Ditzler Hello! I'm Kevin Ditzler and I'm a new contributor to the COTD's! Well anyways, on to the review:

I've heard some (by some I mean some bad player every now and then) hype around Dodrio SV lately. I honestly do not see what anyone sees in this card. When looking at this card, you must think about how it ranks up with other cards that do the same things. This is obviously a drawing card. It draws a free card every turn, and can be used more than once, assuming you have more than one Dodrio out there. Just one card. Its attack is also amazingly expensive and deals a minimal amount of damage. It has a free retreat, which isn't really worth noting, seeing as how you never would want to be attacking with this. Resists Machamp, weak to Luxray GL.

Cards that do a better job:
Uxie LA
Cladol GE
Pretty much can't go wrong with those two. Stick to them, while sending your Dodrios to the binder.

Modified: 2/5 (2 just because it draws a free card.)

Limited: 4/5 (Amazing draft card! Free draws win you draft tournaments. Only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because its attack is a little expensive, even for limited)

Have a nice day.
-Kevin Ditzler
