Houndoom

Modified - If you discard Multi or Double Rainbow Energy with its attack, you do 30 more damage plus burn the Defending Pokemon. So with just a Multi and Special Dark Energy attached, you can do 80 damage plus a possible 20 from burn! The first attack is nice too, since you may discard a very important card of your opponent's. If you're having trouble beating Banette, Houndoom should destroy it. I don't think Houndoom will win many State Championships though because of his relatively low HP, and even though 80 damage is a lot for 2 energy, it's not enough to OHKO the 130 HP big bad Stage 2s. 3/5

Limited - It's great here. Big cheap damage. 4/5

(03/06/08) - Houndoom Lv. 41

Hey, today we have one of my favorite Pokemon from this set, Houndoom.

Name: Houndoom Lv. 41
Set: Great Encounters
Rarity: Rare

Analysis: Houndoom is simply fast, powerful, and cheap. While it stands as a great Turn 2 deck, it can also fit well with Blissey and Darkrai Lv. X. While it is Dark, it does not share the common weakness of fighting, rather water. Putting it with Darkrai or Blissey can help when facing Gallade. 'Dark Fang' fits well in a hand control deck, especially with PlusPower and Special Darkness Energy. 'Black Fire' exhibits Houndoom's strength. 70 for two energy is great, especially if you only need to discard one energy, unlike Infernape. 80 damage wouldn't be uncommon when paired with Darkrai or with a Special Darkness Energy. Even if you discard those energy with the effect, you still do the extra ten damage. Resistance to Psychic and weakness to water are good, as is the retreat cost of 1. Expect to see Houndoom lurking about.

Modified: Very good. Hits hard, and combos well with a bunch of good Pokemon. (4.5/5)

Limited: Good here as well. You can hit hard for cheap. Only downside is discarding energy. (4/5)

It’s that time again folks! Today’s COTD is a new attempt at a steadier turn 2 deck, something that doesn’t just loose late game. This could work, 90 HP is great for a turn 2 pokemon and one retreat and psychic resistance are good too! The first attack is only for if you lack energy for the second (Duh,) only doing 20 for (D). But the second attack is awesome when used with a DRE or a Multi energy. If you discard a Multi (Or DRE) you get not only 70 (Or 60) for (F)(C) but also you burn the opponent too! Needs to be tested and get toasted by Magmortar late game, but it could work.

Pros –
T2 70 and burn with Multi
60 and burn for only DRE

Cons –
Not enough HP
No massive damage finisher moves

Modified – Not quite what T2 decks need, but it’ll do. 3.5/5

Limited – NO! Discarding energy here is bad! Only use the 20 for (D) move! 2/5

Thursday already, I hope the weekend moves by quickly…

Houndoom lv 41

This card is one of those cards where you have to be a sorcerer to know what its current ruling is. I believe that right now you get both effects if you discard multi or DRE.

This makes quite a good card. Its very fast hits hard and with the aid of PP it can be deadly. It beats bannete and its speed makes it not unlikely to beat Gardelade (no I am not joking 130 is not hard to hit with burn and PP)

Overall one of the best rares in the set.
