Steelix: Mediocre attacks, high energy cost. He's terrible 1/5

Steelix

Yet another banana for that fiendish fire monkey Infernape. Any pokémon with a large retreat cost allows for potential counters to have little problem, but with Steelix it's a lot worse. His first attack is not going to pile on the damage, but with such an expensive retreat the second is not going to be very efficent.

Another mediocre card that does not combo with any others.

1.1/5

Welcome, to another pokemon COTD. Today’s COTD is just a few numbers away from being good. Here, I’ll show you what I mean. If he had 10 more HP, he could survive a OHKO from the “Angry Monkey Lord” Infernape, but he can’t. If his second attack cost one less energy, he might be used with scramble energy in a deck idea, but “Metal Slash” is 1 © too expensive. And, if he had 2 less retreat, somebody might actually retreat him the turn after using “Metal Slash”, but 4 is too expensive to retreat him. As is, he just isn’t good enough to see tournament play.

Pros –
100 damage
Stage 1
Psychic resistance

Cons –
4 retreat
He can still be OHKO’ed by the “Red Rampaging Monkey” Infernape
His second attack is 1 © too expensive
He can’t attack for one turn after using “Metal Slash”

Unlimited – no 1/5

Modified – not quite good enough 2.5/5

Limited – big HP, large attack, new metal basic energies, oh yea 4/5

Too bad, 10 more HP or 1 © less, and he’d see some play,

Steelix Lv. 50 Diamond and Pearl

Unlimited: 2/5 This card is actually a lot better here than most cards we've reviewed.

Modified: 2.5/5 You know 100 damage is always a good thing. However, weakness to Ape and tough effect make this card less playable. Someone will probably make some sick combo with this to do 100 every turn, but I am not that person ;x All I can say is play DRE, Switches, and Warp Points with this.

Limited: 3.5/5 This card would be better if not for the Metal type. Unless you can draft a lot of Metal basic energies, you'll be better off playing a different type. 110 HP and a 100 damage attack is still really good though.

Steelix is one of my favorites, but not this version. He does 30x 2 coin flips for one energy, but that could net you 0 damage. 100 damage is always good, losing an attack is not. He is a Stage 1, and as such is a beast to play against, but it is too hard to get him out with enough energy to do much. He does combo alright with Magnezone from D+P though.

Modified-2/5
LImited-4/5 (He is a bomb, but hard to play because he requires Metal Energy)
Michael from Denmark

2 worlds and 4 national finals.

Stelix lv. 50
I kind of like this card but cannot find a deck to put it in.
First attack ok hp great. Second attack... Hmm well the deck need to be build around it but if you do it could be good..
all around an ok card that are unlikely to have great impact on the game good with cs.
Great with briney.
