If your opponent GUST OF WINDs your Charmander back to the bench, the Defender goes with it (and still protects Charmander until the end of your opponent's turn), but it does not protect your new active pokemon. No, you do not lose if you have no cards in hand. There are no restrictions to hand size in Pokemon. Brian Brokaw
